Had a pretty satisfying total body workout today. I wasn’t quite sure I was actually going to get to a workout today… I was considering doing some Stepmania, and thought that I might just do a light stretching workout with that. But I was feeling more in the mood for a good yoga workout, so I decided to stick with my original plan and do a total body workout. I think that it worked out pretty well. I felt like I was pretty well in tune with the workout, and staying involved throughout. I think the highlight was probably the upward bows… I really felt like I was getting more extension than ever before. No idea if I actually was or not, but that’s what it felt like. I do feel like I’ve made some improvements in my flexibility during this off-season… now I have to try and maintain them during the season. It shouldn’t be too hard, as long as I keep doing some serious workouts, and don’t injure myself such that I can’t stretch properly. No idea what the likelihood of that is, but it’s a good theory, anyway. Tomorrow… most likely I will go with Stepmania and a light stretching workout, particularly because it’s been several days since I got on the pad. I’d do some now, but last time I tried it after a total body workout, it didn’t work out so well, and I suspect that I’d have a similar problem today, so I guess I’ll lay off for one more day. I’m probably going to “lose” a workout in the next couple of days, as I’m trying to flip my schedule around to be more… well, in line with the part of the world I’m in, anyway. There’s a possibility I’ll double up one of these days with a “morning” and then an “evening” workout, but it’s more likely I’ll just drop a workout, essentially. At any rate, until next time…

Decided to try something a little different again today. Started off by getting into the total body workout. It was pretty tiring… I wasn’t sure I was going to make it through a couple of parts. I felt a little bit weak at times. I suppose that’s perhaps a little bit to be expected… I’ve dropped my calorie intake down to approximately 2500 calories/day, which is a little bit lower than I’ve been getting lately. Still a very reasonable amount, but it makes a certain amount of sense that I might have a bit less energy to go around. However, I managed to fight through, and did everything in the workout except for the first of the upward bows. After the upward bows, I went and did Stepmania for a while. Only about half an hour today… my feet were a bit sore from yesterday, and my legs were fairly tired from the total body workout. After that, I went back and did the rest of the total body workout, which is to say, the cool down part. Not sure how much of a difference it made, but it’s nice to cool down after the workout, so that put it after all the working out. I’ll probably go with some abs tomorrow, although I might take it a little bit easier, and just do yoga abs or something. Maybe balanceball… I guess I’ll see how I feel.

Motivational issues have been continuing over the last couple of days. Ended up missing the workout yesterday due to a few different factors. Not sure if I’ll “make it up” at some point or not. I’m not really sure where I’m going with my practice at the moment. I’ve been somewhat trying to work on my strength, but the thing is, I don’t really have any particular need for additional strength. I don’t do any sports in which greater strength will provide any advantage. I don’t need to be stronger to do a job. So the only potential benefit is perhaps looking a little more “buff”. And I’m really not certain that’s sufficient motivation. On the other hand, I do have a use for both greater flexibility and greater endurance. So I think I’m going to start shifting my focus somewhat. Probably deemphasizing the yoga a little bit, and perhaps increasing my cardio training. I’m not really certain yet, but I think this’ll probably happen. The time has come for me to admit that ultimate is really my focus, at this point in my life. While I think yoga is important, and I intend to keep up with it, it doesn’t fill a… need, the way that ultimate does right now. Not entirely certain what this is going to mean for the workouts… other than that I’ll probably be doing total body, the full complete workout, and YCfA more frequently, and probably be cutting back on some of the more strength oriented workouts. Possibly cutting back somewhat on workouts in general, depending on what kind of cardio workouts I’m getting in.
Somewhat ironically, I only did the short version of this workout today, doing the first section and then skipping to the last. While I started out with the intention of doing the complete workout, I realized pretty quickly that my energy levels weren’t where they really needed to be. I haven’t been doing the greatest job of eating the past few days, largely due to depression issues. I have this notion in my head that I don’t really need proper nutrition and rest, that I should still be able to function at full efficiency without them. While I’ve certainly been getting better about not believing that in the past year or so, I definitely still have times where I think that’s the case. Depression in particular often causes me to start skipping meals, because I just don’t feel like eating. Anyway… summary is that my energy levels were low, and while I’m fairly certain I could have pushed through anyway, I decided to actually listen to my body for a change, and take it a bit easier. That’s something else that I really need to start doing more of… listening to my body, particularly when it has injuries that need to heal. Not just paying attention, because I do that reasonably well, but actually listening, and not just ignoring what it’s telling me. I don’t know. My head is kind of a mess currently, but… this may actually be the start of something better. Or perhaps it’ll just be another blip on the radar. Only time will tell for sure. Not sure what workout I’ll do next… not even sure when I’ll do it, although tomorrow is a pretty likely candidate. So until next time…

I wasn’t quite feeling ready for the workout last night, and then I ended up procrastinating too long and not getting the workout in during the “day”. Which wasn’t ideal, but wasn’t terrible because I had been thinking of taking a short break anyway, just to let my body recover a little bit more. So I decided to get in an earlier workout tonight. I’ll probably catch up later with a short stretching workout, most likely after some Stepmania. That’s the plan for right now, anyway.
The workout itself was decent, although tiring. I was hoping that the extra rest would have let me recover a bit more of my endurance, but my shoulders still got tired pretty quickly. Glad I wasn’t trying to do intermediate yoga, I don’t think I would have gotten very far. Despite experiencing some fatigue, I was still able to get in the complete workout, save one upward bow. I probably could have done that as well, but I just wasn’t feeling ready for it. I did notice today that even if my legs are feeling tired, as long as I can get past the warrior I set, the other two exercises really don’t require that much leg strength or endurance. They’re really more about balancing, overall. It’s good to note, because it makes it a lot more likely that I’ll get through that section now. I didn’t feel quite as flexible today as I did the other day with the YCfA workout, but that’s not unexpected… that kind of thing comes and goes. Anyway, presuming I do get in my short workout later sometime, I’ll probably go with an abs/short workout combo tomorrow… possibly hip opening for the short workout, although I might decide to take a break from that. It’s good, but I don’t want to overdo it and injure a knee again or anything like that. We’ll see. Until later…

Finally made it back to the total body workout today. I’m sure this is the first time I’ve done the workout in months, since I’m fairly certain I haven’t done it since sometime before jamming the pinkie on the right hand. It went pretty well, actually. I figured I probably wouldn’t be able to make it through the whole thing since it’s been so long since I did it, but I was actually able to complete everything, even the upward bows, although I did cut a few things a few seconds short. Still, it was a lot better than I was expecting, and pretty encouraging overall. I’m now somewhat more hopeful that I’ll be able to really make some progress during the remainder of the off season. Focus was fairly decent for the workout, that may have helped somewhat. Took yesterday off from the Stepmania, going to take today off as well, and hopefully be ready to get in a serious workout tomorrow. Not sure how I’m going to handle doing both the yoga and the Stepmania, especially if I get back to doing an hour worth of yoga a day, which I’d like, but I’ll just have to play that by ear. I should have the time for it, I’m just not sure I have the energy. Although the workout today didn’t drain me too badly, it was tiring. Hard to say. I’m probably going to be pretty damn sore tomorrow, so most likely something light to stretch out a little.

Made a fairly weak attempt to do the total body workout tonight. I wasn’t quite in the mood for a long workout, but I couldn’t really decide what I was in the mood for. So I eventually just started this workout, and went with it. But I didn’t get terribly far… for whatever reason, both my ankle and pinkie seemed a little bit unhappy today, at least as far as yoga was concerned. So I didn’t even make it through the first section before jumping to the last section. Still, it wasn’t a bad workout. Not as complete as would have been ideal, perhaps, but I felt like I got some benefit out of the stretching routines. So it wasn’t a complete bust. My hamstrings were a little sore from the last couple of days, but not too bad. Hopefully that will still be the case tomorrow. I’ll probably take it fairly easy tomorrow, with just the ultimate warmup as a workout. Lots of things to do, little time left to get them done and all that. I might pick up a bit on Wednesday, but we’ll see what happens.

After a few weeks of lameness and excuses, I finally managed to get a decent workout in tonight. While I’m still trying to let a couple of my minor aches heal, I think it was good for me to push myself a little more than I have been lately. Hopefully not to the point of retarding any healing, but at least to the point of getting a full workout. I was pretty pleased with the workout tonight… I was mentally involved, and really trying to focus on my mechanics. While it was pretty tiring, I think that it helped me gain a little bit of insight into some of the poses, particularly the warrior poses. I’m not sure that my legs are quite ready for what I learned, but I may be underestimating them. While they were tired, they did make it through the workout without much trouble. I’ve also adjusted my upward bow a little… after checking out the pose description, I decided that I was probably letting my legs turn outward at times, and that’s when I was having problems with the pose. So today I skipped the middle one, and focused on making sure that my legs didn’t turn outward. That seemed to work pretty well… my lower back didn’t hurt, and the pose seemed a little bit easier overall. So hopefully proper attention to detail will solve my periodic issues with doing that pose. The stretches felt pretty good, I took it easy on the wide leg seated forward bend, in order to not strain the tailbone any more than I already had. I can’t wait until that gets back to normal. Anyway, a pretty good workout today… I think I’ll probably go for something like abs pilates tomorrow, or maybe balanceball, and possibly something else as well. Until then…

Had double trouble today with both a cold day and hamstring muscles that didn’t seem to want to stretch out. I’m not quite certain what the problem was that they didn’t want to stretch, but even after going through the shortened total body workout, they didn’t feel like they were really properly stretched out. On the plus side, I did notice that if I take a wide stance with the warrior poses (particularly warrior II), I get a pretty good stretch of the groin. So that makes up for not getting in a backbend lunge.
Went out to ultimate, and as expected, it was cold. It took us a while, but we eventually got 7 on 7, so that was good. And we had a full length field today, which was very nice. However, near the end of the game, everything was starting to feel frozen, particularly hands and forearms, but I could feel that my muscles weren’t really thrilled with the state of affairs, either. So after I got home, I went in for my mini-workout trifecta. Even so, my muscles aren’t feeling particularly well stretched, but I don’t want to push them too much, either. Obviously, I’ll be taking the rest of the night off, and hopefully resting them will allow them to recover quickly. If not, it might be a light workout tomorrow, or possibly abs or something like that. I’m really hoping for them to be recovered by Thursday, especially since it’s supposed to be cold again then, too.

Decided to try and get a more complete stretch in before ultimate today. Not that I’ve really had a problem with my free form routine, but since it’s early in the season, and not as warm as it will be later, I’m trying to be a little more careful in hopes of avoiding straining and pulling muscles. So for today, I went with the shortened version of the total body workout. For some reason, I didn’t seem to be in the mood to do it… I was kind of reluctant to go through the first part. But I figured that I’d feel better after I went through it and gotten a good stretch in, so I continued on. After I finished the first part, I skipped to the last… had no motivational problems with that. Kind of odd, but whatever. In the end, I felt that my hamstrings were nicely loosened and ready to play. I did make one modification, I substituted the seated twist from the all sports workout for the regular seated twist of the total body workout. I felt that it would help stretch my hips a little better, and not potentially strain my knees. Anyway, all of the stretching must have been reasonably effective, since I made it through ultimate without even a twinge in the muscles. Afterwards, I wanted to make sure that I didn’t tighten up too much, so I did a light cooldown, mostly in the style of the all sports workout. I did it free form, and took it a little bit slower than the actual workout, but the pose sequence was very similar. After all that, I’m feeling pretty good, but a little worn down. Hard to say what I’ll do tomorrow… it’ll probably depend on how I’m feeling. I’m thinking abs pilates and py:strength, but that might be a bit ambitious. I guess we’ll see then.

Had a pretty satisfying workout tonight. I haven’t really gotten as much work done as I need to, but I’ll be getting to that shortly. I had been thinking about a total body workout for a few days, and despite the fact that it was a bit longer than I wanted to take this evening, I decided to just go for it. I’m pretty happy that I did… it was a mental and physical success, the former being the more important part here. I was largely able to block out the thought of work, and just concentrate on what I was doing. I also started remembering some things, like the idea of truly integrating the breath and movement. I didn’t remember that until a little later in the workout, and was having some trouble with it at times, but I’m going to try and remember to keep working on it.
The physical aspects were pretty good, too. Being mentally present really allows me to examine how my body feels during the workout, and make adjustments. So I think the workout was more fulfilling that way. But I also managed to show some mental toughness, as well… I thought about skipping warrior III, because I was feeling tired, but I decided that I was just being lazy, and that I was perfectly capable of getting through it. And not only was I capable, I actually did it pretty well. I think I was a little more physically tired than I might have been because I was working on really doing poses to the best of my ability. It’s a little more tiring now, but I think that it’ll pay dividends in the future. Then later in the workout, I was considering skipping the upward bows, but went through with them as well. My reward was that I really liked the positioning for one of them, the first one, I think. It just felt right, a lot more so than I can ever remember the pose feeling. So that was cool. Tried to keep things calm during the stretches, not overextend on things, but I won’t know how I did until tomorrow. At the same time, though, I also tried to really understand what my body was telling me, and adjust to fully extend and lengthen the body. Overall, I’m quite pleased with the workout, and look forward to having more strong workouts in the near future.

I’ve been pretty happy with my awareness levels during my workouts lately. I definitely feel like I’ve been paying better attention to how my body feels, not so much in general but in particular areas of note. For instance, when doing extended triangle pose, I don’t pay all that much attention to whether I’m looking at the top hand with one eye or both, but instead I focus on the placement of my feet, the distribution of my weight, and the rotation of the hip within the socket. I also try and pay attention to the little details mentioned in the workout, although that’s admittedly still a work in progress. Mostly I just try and stay aware of my muscles, and try to be responsive to them. I think this awareness has been very beneficial to my workouts… the most noticeable effect being a greater awareness of my hamstrings, and a corresponding lack of soreness due to the workouts.
Tonight’s workout was pretty good. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve felt I’ve really completed the entirety of the workout. Of course, I haven’t done this workout all that much in the past nine months or so, so that’s not saying as much as it might otherwise be. I felt really good in the beginning, though, and didn’t get at all tired during the first section. Really, I wouldn’t say that I got tired at all, although my muscles started to feel a little weary eventually, particularly during the upward bows. I still think that I might be doing something slightly wrong there… then again, maybe it’s just not that easy of a pose. Even so, I managed to work my way through those as well, and then finish out with a pretty decent session of stretching and relaxing. The relaxing could probably use a little work, but that’s certainly nothing new. Anyway, I’m pretty happy with today’s workout… I’d like to start getting my workouts in a little earlier, but I need to get going on some sort of consistent schedule to do that. I’m guessing that I’ll probably go with something lighter tomorrow, although I may try to do abs and something. There’s also an outside chance of a full YCfA session, but that’s a little less likely. Until then…

I think I’m getting back to having a better connection between body and mind, finally. While I was definitely interested in doing this workout tonight, it took me a while to actually get to it. When I first was in the mood for a workout, I was also feeling somewhat restless, not quite right. Eventually I decided that I really needed to eat some more, and then do the workout a little while after that. So that’s what I did. After eating and waiting a while, I felt much stronger and ready for a workout, so I went ahead with the total body workout.
I think that I finally figured out how I was making my hamstrings so sore. During the early standing forward bends, I think that I was pulling into them, straining my hamstrings. So the soreness was less from later stretching, as I once believed, and more from the early part of the workout. Which would also explain the trend of soreness from some of the other workouts, where the standing forward bend is more prevalent. I laid off doing that tonight, at least after the beginning, so I’ll have to note if my hamstrings are considerably less sore tomorrow. Other than that… the workout went pretty decently. I’m definitely not quite in the shape that I was in during May and June of 2004, since I started getting tired near the end of the second section. Mostly in the arms, but just generally a little tired, too. But I was able to pull through and complete the workout, the only part that was somewhat less complete was the upward bow sequence. I got into all of them, but I came out early each time. And I was definitely feeling some muscle fatigue by then. But, given how long it’s been since I did the full workout, and how light the yoga schedule has been for the last six months or so, it’s not terribly surprising that my stamina has decreased a bit. Hopefully my aggressive plan for the month will get it back to those previous levels, and I’ll be able to maintain it once spring starts and ultimate resumes on a more consistent basis.

Well, I ended up being lazy last night. That’s not actually quite true… there was a bit of laziness, but I was planning on doing a workout… I just ended up falling asleep before I got to it. All told, I ended up sleeping for something like 27 hours in a 40 hour span, so it’s not particularly surprising that I didn’t get a workout in. On the plus side, I think I’ve made up for a lot of the deficit of the past few weeks, and will probably be sleeping more normal amounts in the upcoming days.
Anyway, went with the total body workout today. I’m still feeling pretty excited about getting in some really good workouts, and wanted to get to it. Unfortunately, a side effect of spending all that time sleeping was that I didn’t spend all that much time eating. So after a little while, I started to notice that the workout was quite fatiguing, from an energy perspective. I had been planning on doing the whole thing, but wore down quickly enough that I decided to skip ahead to the cooldown section right before doing the warrior III sequence. I was a little disappointed about skipping the backbends, but decided that I’d rather back off for today and be ready to go again tomorrow, than risk injuring myself doing something I didn’t have the energy for. So I’m going to be paying more attention to my diet, and will probably come back with either another long workout tomorrow, or possibly an abs/short workout combo.

I was originally going to do an abs workout today, but I decided that perhaps I was better off stretching out more today and doing the abs workout tomorrow. I wasn’t particularly inspired by the selection of workouts available, but I eventually decided to try and get in a good total body workout. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do the full workout, but I decided to at least start with the idea of doing the full workout. When I got to the end of the first section, I realized I was running a little low on energy, probably due to not having had much to eat in the last 24 hours. So I decided to go ahead and skip to the last section. I think perhaps I’ve discovered something about stretching in the last couple of weeks… I seemed to have better knowledge of when and where to really extend. So I’m hoping this will mean that my hamstrings aren’t really sore tomorrow. I’ll find out then, of course. I have some new ideas on the matter, at any rate. Nothing overly noteworthy… I bruised my right elbow on the outside edge yesterday at some point, and so that was a little annoying, especially when in pushup pose. However, the problem with my left knee doesn’t seem to have gotten worse, and I certainly wasn’t taking it easy on it, so it seems like it’s going to heal fairly quickly. Maybe I can start planning my next injury now. Or at least planning for it… if only I knew what it was going to be. Anyway, I’ll probably try and get a pilates workout in tomorrow if I can motivate up for it, otherwise just the standard abs yoga, most likely.

Well, the cold that I had hit its peak on Monday night and Tuesday, so I’ve been taking a little time off in order to rest up and recover. The car fixing also took a little bit longer than anticipated, so we didn’t get home until Tuesday night. A workout on Thursday would probably have been okay, but I’ve been somewhat enjoying just having a little time off with absolutely nothing particularly pressing to do. So I just went ahead and took another day of rest, even though it probably wasn’t necessary.
The workout tonight was decent. I was originally contemplating doing the full workout, but decided that my energy levels were still a little low from the cold, and since I hadn’t done a full workout like that in a few months, it seemed like that might be pushing things a little much. So I just did the first section and the last section. I did note that the latest injury to the thigh really took my mind off of the shoulder for a few days… now it seems as though they’ve healed to about an even level, such that I have a very slight concern about both, but basically have full range of motion now. I added to my injuries a bit on Monday, scraping up my left arm, as well as my left thigh, again. But as I said… two weeks to heal. So I should be back to form by the time I’ll be playing again. Hopefully I’ll be mostly back to yoga form, as well. We’ll see how the next week goes.

Went for the partial total body session today in order to warm up for ultimate. My hamstrings were a little sore from yesterday, showing that I still managed to push a little harder than I should have. One of these days I’ll learn, I’m sure. So I was hoping to stretch that tightness out, as well as limbering up a bit in general for the ultimate. While I’ve been okay with a more minimal stretching routine, I think a more complete regimen will certainly lower my chances of getting injured randomly.
Anyway, expanded the short session a little bit today. Did the entire first section, and then skipped into the third section for a few backbends. That included the deep lunge stretch, which I was happy about, since I felt that it was doing a good job of stretching the inner thigh area. I’ll be incorporating that into my free form workouts before ultimate, if I remember. Well, that’s it for today. Depending on how I’m feeling tomorrow, I might try out my new intermediate yoga workout… if not tomorrow, I definitely plan on doing it on Saturday.

Started in on my revitalized regime tonight with a total body workout. I don’t think it’s been too long since I last did the complete workout, but I’m sure it’s been long enough. But I felt ready for it tonight, so I went ahead and dug in. It went pretty well… I was keeping my focus, for the most part. I definitely think my form suffers when my mind starts to wander. Probably the worst part about it was that it was apparently quite warm… I was sweating fairly heavily even in the opening section, and actually had to change mats after the second section because the danger of slipping was so high. Other than that, though, things went pretty well. I was continuing to try and work my knee a little more, just subtly pushing it closer to the edge of what it can do… I did all of the exercises with it today, modifying where necessary (which wasn’t often), with the sole exception of one-legged forward bend. I even set up for that, and just very carefully started to let my leg bend out to the side, holding it on the way down and making sure I didn’t start to overdo the extension. So even there I went further than I have for quite a while. The only other thing I didn’t do was the upward bows, not because I wasn’t able so much, but because I was too sweaty at that point, and couldn’t get proper traction on the mat, so I was afraid I was going to slide out unexpectedly. I did get into two of them briefly, but ended up getting back out quickly as I felt myself slipping around. Things mostly went pretty well, though… had a very successful time with warrior III on both sides, which is always good… may have learned how to position my back leg properly on warrior I… actually, not so much the leg, but the foot needs to be in at more of an angle than it does for other poses. Otherwise, it’s difficult to get the proper twist in the hips. Anyway, overall a fairly good session… I’ll quite likely do something in the abs area tomorrow, either balanceball or, if I’m feeling particularly daring, I may attempt pilates.

Decided to go with the shortened session of total body as a warmup for ultimate today. At this point, I’m really not certain what my motivation is for picking any particular workout to warm up, or any workout at all, I suppose… just how I feel that day, I guess.
Anyway, the workout went well enough. I concentrated on extending from the hips and thighs again instead of pulling on the hamstrings, which I think is an improvement… at least, my hamstrings have seemed a little less tender the past couple of days, although I’ve still be working them at least as much as I was before. Anyway. This workout was supposed to be a warmup for ultimate, but I’m strangely really not feeling in the mood to play, or perhaps more accurately feeling that there are several other things that I’d potentially rather be doing, so I’m going to pass for tonight, I think. It’s probably good… helps me remember that it is a leisure activity, and that I don’t need to play every time a game is available to me. I’m sure my body could use the extra rest as well, and my knee might especially appreciate the time off to heal. So I’ll probably follow up with a good workout tomorrow, possibly even two if I’m really inspired, or maybe one tonight if I don’t end up getting some other exercise in.

This wasn’t really what I originally had in mind for tonight, but after a fairly lengthy decision making process, I decided to go ahead and give it a try. It went very well, actually… I was pleasantly surprised. I think some of my observations about my techniques for the warrior poses really paid off in this workout, as my legs really weren’t getting tired at all during the first section. I was originally thinking that I might just do the first section, and then skip to the last, but since I was still feeling quite energetic by the end of the first section, I decided to go ahead and continue on. I had some trouble with half moon again today, but warrior III went pretty well. I even did some of the backbend work… I decided to skip the last couple of minutes, because I worried that it might not be entirely beneficial to my knee. I was very careful to try and avoid doing anything that might be a problem today… I skipped a few of the stretching exercises in order to avoid potential problems. I think that all this care is helping, but it’s still a slow process. One day, I shall be whole and uninjured again. Anyway. It was a good workout, and doing it made me realize that it has relatively little impact on the knee, which is good, because I was overestimating the trouble that it would cause. So now I have another workout that I can turn to while avoiding straining the knee, as long as I make sure to avoid some of the stretches.

Went with the beginning of total body as my warm up for ultimate again today. Again, I had some trouble really getting into the workout. I’ve just been feeling a bit… fatigued, or something, lately. Just doing the first section was causing me a bit of fatigue, and it really shouldn’t be. Oh well. Nothing much more to say about it… I did notice that my back was aching a little in a few of the poses, downward dog in particular. That’s really rather odd… I don’t know if it was some of the furniture moving I did yesterday, or if it was from the yoga session. I’m sure it’ll probably be gone tomorrow, but it’s still kind of odd. Anyway, hopefully I’ll start breaking out of this slump soon.
