In case you thought Kristi and I were just obsessed with yarn (which we are and don't deny it), I thought it'd be nice to offer proof of knitting as well.
First off, I finished the socks for BMFA. Nothing like an FO to make a knitter happy. Just to mess with you, I'm going to show them to you inside out. These were knit on size US1 / 2.25mm needles using 1 skein of Socks That Rock in Highway 30. Again, before you ask WTF is wrong with these socks, they are inside out.
Then I tried a bunch of different ideas with all the wonderfully colorful sock yarn I have before I went into sensory overload and project idea failure. There's only so many times I can rip something before I give up. So I went back to the basics. Here is some pretty white yarn.
I'm out of new beer at the moment, so why not break out the scotch? At 111.6 proof, you can't go wrong. Or wait, maybe you can go horribly horribly wrong. I forget.
Lest you think it's boring, let me give you a close-up of the "cool part".
I am in love.
Very cool. Where in the sockly anatomy is the coolness? The heel? The ankle? Elsewhere?
Posted by: Nephele at October 17, 2006 9:30 AMWhoa.. very cool! Have you tried Stockyard Stout (if you like dark beer, that is)? And yes, it seems as if I'm totally using the sock stash "fight"... STR is calling my naaaaame.
Posted by: yaiAnn at October 17, 2006 9:38 AMooh, very cool! sometimes it's nice to tone down the yarn and let the stitches do all the work. and go get some beer before anything goes horribly wrong!
Posted by: al at October 17, 2006 10:11 AMWow! I just learned that maybe if I have a shot (or two?) of 111.6 proof scotch I can come up w. a cool stitch design! I tell ya, reading blogs, you really learn alot! In all seriousness - a stunning stitch pattern - so tiny!
Posted by: Terry at October 17, 2006 11:09 AMOOOOOOOOO
What a cool idea! The important part of the sock (well sort of) color is awesome. And the cable? OOOOOOOOO I'll have to scotch more when I knit.
I can't wait 'til BMFA releases your pattern to everyone, especially those of us not in the STR Club. Am bummed I missed seeing these in person at Purlescence, so I'm relying on my friend's account on seeing it.
Posted by: C. at October 17, 2006 11:52 AMAhhh clarity and simplicity, the two foundations for happiness.
Well and of course Scotch.
Posted by: Rebekah at October 17, 2006 12:36 PMHoly Cow! The motif made my jaw drop. Can I say...I want it....?
Posted by: Dr. Judy at October 17, 2006 1:02 PMDamn! And to think I was foiled by a mere Smirnoff Twisted malt beverage!
Posted by: shadkitty at October 17, 2006 1:02 PMHmmm. I saw you knitting that sock, and you didn't SMELL of scotch ... though you did smell of port when you were finishing up those BMFA socks ...
Posted by: Kristi at October 17, 2006 1:19 PMPretty, pretty, pretty.
Oh, I'm sorry, I was talking about the Scotch. The socks look pretty too!
Posted by: Sarah at October 17, 2006 1:43 PMOooh....I'm in love, too. I swear I don't mean that in a weird way.
Posted by: Kate A. at October 17, 2006 2:03 PMBE STILL MY HEART! Those are lovely....I want pretty white socks with amazing details? Is this a "you" pattern? Or one that is fully formed and in print, available to masses like RIGHT NOW?
Love the pink....when may we see them right side out? :)
That motif is gorgeous! And thank you for the double warning that the other socks were inside out because I was skimming the text, admiring the socks and wondering what stitch that was. That is one neat inside. Please don't look inside my socks.
Posted by: Carrie K at October 17, 2006 2:25 PMi have found that things can also go horribly, horribly wrong with too much newcastle.
gorgeous coolness on that sock!
Posted by: laura at October 17, 2006 2:26 PMThat is some cool cabling. I can't wait to see how it looks as a completed sock.
And am I crazy for thinking the STR sock looked fab before I realised it was inside out? :)
Posted by: Hazel at October 17, 2006 2:39 PMAh, white. I think as long as you're not drinking red wine, you'll be fine!
Posted by: Laura at October 17, 2006 4:25 PMI'm a new reader, so please forgive if you've already answered this previously, but that little white sock motif is gorgeous - can you share your pattern source?
Posted by: Sue at October 17, 2006 9:03 PMUm, WTF is wrong with that sock?!
Lovely color! I'd love to see the outside.
The white sock looks great.. Can't wait to see the FO.
Is this a sock pattern you're making up as you go, or are you knitting someone else's pattern? And if the former, will it eventually be available for public consumption? *Hint, hint*
Posted by: G. Knerd at October 17, 2006 11:59 PMyou knitted that while drinking scotch? hmmm ... i haven't tried scotch (yet). is it something i should keep in my knitting bag?
Posted by: gray la gran at October 18, 2006 5:47 AMYou are such a tease! Come on, now. Show us the outside of the sock. I tried knitting last night drinking vodka, and I kept reading and rereading VERY EASY instructions, thinking, these aren't making ANY sense!:-)
Posted by: Leslie at October 18, 2006 6:18 AMDo you not like the finished socks? The white one with the fabulously ornate cable is gorgeous! I can't wait to see it finished.
Thanks for the beer tip, awhile back. I had never tried
HefeWeizen, and although I couldn't find the brand you had, I did buy some Paulaner. It's now my new favorite beer.
Out of beer? Gasp!
I can see why you're in love. That is really pretty!
Posted by: Karen at October 18, 2006 8:15 AMI'm in love too! I hope you offer this one somehow, somewhere, for us lowly uncreative types to try to emulate.
Posted by: Janet at October 18, 2006 8:17 AMGorgeous. All these pics of STR are making my head hurt and my fingers twitch. I might need to drive down to the South Bay get my fix!
Posted by: Suzie at October 18, 2006 8:20 AMThat's a mind-bogglingly elaborate little motif you got there, missy. I'd need a stiff drink too.
For your next beer replenishment, may I recommend Franziskaner Weiss? Excellent stuff in the Hefenweizen category. Monk beer.
ooh pretty! I love fancy motifs with plain yarns... Did you see the latest Knitty blog post? A pomotamus sock is featured in Knitty's calendar for December! They look great in red :)
Posted by: Amy at October 18, 2006 12:21 PMaye I love it too!!
the white is such a palette cleanser
Posted by: yahaira at October 18, 2006 12:37 PMWhy are they inside out? The cool part of the white socks is really cool! (Do I need a thesaurus or what!)
Posted by: Devorah at October 18, 2006 4:01 PMI don't know, I kinda of like those socks inside out (my way of gettin' back at you for teasing us!). I love that white yarn; it's funny how much colour predominates and then to see a lovely white is just so sublime. The scotch looks yummy...nothing like a good scotch now and then. The cable - god you are such an enchantress Cookie!
Posted by: Cynthia at October 18, 2006 4:42 PMhow's the scotch? :)
(i'm so excited, we can view flickr at work today so I can actually see your pictures!!! - who knows why - fingers crossed it doesn't get blocked again later!!)
