Book Review: Kunstbreiwerk B39

Not quite a review in that I can't read it at all, but I sure can look at the pictures! Back when I said I'd bought a vintage lace pattern book that was Dutch, I accidentally posted about a German book instead. This is the one I meant to post about. It is called Kunstbreiwerk, and I assume that B39 is the issue number. It doesn't have a date on it. The pictures are smaller than the book because the book is too large to fit on my scanner.

There are 16 pages total with projects ranging from small doilies to larger tablecloths with one curtain. There are a couple square patterns and several oblong ones as well. Many of the flower shapes look distinctly awkward to me (but in a good way), sort of crookedly angular as you can see in the pictures. I think they are beautiful. On the back, it says "Auteursrechten voorbehouden - A. en H. Bruil, Uitgevers, Doetinchem" which Babelfish makes me believe means A and H Bruil are the editors. Michael Kaprelian has knit a doily from Kunstbreien, another of their publications. I would be very curious to know more about these patterns. If anybody has any information, please let me know!

There is a center fold out page with all the charts. Unfortunately, this book is rather old and is coming apart. I wonder if I should photocopy it for my purposes and keep the original somewhere safe. Any suggestions for handling old pattern books? I have some more that are literally falling apart. They were all bought from an online seller advertising them as crochet lace booklets. She said they were complicated and foreign and that she couldn't understand them even though she crochets. No wonder, I recognized them immediately as knitting books!

I learned more about this book! I was over at Gracie Larsen's house (she runs the Lacy Knitters Guild) and she had a book I'd seen on Martina's site. I had been intrigued by it, but the description and picture aren't very telling, so I was glad to be able to leaf through it at Gracie's house. Well guess what. It's EXACTLY the same book as Kunstbreiwerk B39, but mine is a Dutch version. From what I can tell, it was originally printed by Buchverlag für die Frau in Germany, but I don't know if the German printing was the original printing or not. I am fascinated and now very tempted to order the other Kunst Stricken books that Martina has.
