SHIT

Non-Knitting rant warning (minimal knitting content below)

So today I woke up early, did some stuff, and then left for my morning Step Aerobics class. Why, good god, am I taking step aerobics? Let me tell you. You see, this school, this UNIVERSITY, for some godforsaken reason, requires all students to take three quarters of physical education including swimming if you don't know how. Luckily, I know how to swim. And luckily they offered a placement test that would allow you to pass out of some, so I passed out of two quarters. Quite unfortunately, I have to take one quarter of P.E. to graduate. So, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, I go through the humiliating ritual of step aerobics with bouncing 18-20 year olds. This SUCKS.

So today I'm hopping along on my way to class, and then when I'm almost there I realize I left my ID in a different bag. SHIT. You see, they require an ID to get into the gym, so I wasn't going to make it to class. And SHIT, this is my second absence. That's the max number of absences we're allowed. This sucks. If I don't get through this class, that means either (a) I take p.e. in the winter (good god, I'd rather not graduate!) or (b) I hope I can get into a class in the spring, or (c) I don't graduate unless I stay longer just to take P.E.

Granted, I realize this P.E. requirement is because nobody on this campus would ever exercise otherwise (let's face it, this is nerd central). But still, shouldn't they have an exception for older people like me? I'm CROTCHETY.

Sigh.

OK, ONTO THE KNITTING

I did not knit very much last night. I did go to Stitch n Bitch, but for some reason I never get much knitting done there. Too much distraction. What I did do is figure out how I'm going to modify the aran sweater. This is what it's supposed to look like:

That is HUGE and boxy. I'm changing it to a raglan per Laura's suggestion, and last night I figured out just how the sleeves are going to work. I have this nifty piece of paper with a diagram and pen marks slashing through it. Woot.

Butterfly has progressed but not enough to take a picture. I am still in love with Silk Garden despite the pieces of straw in it. Or the two knots I've encountered so far. To console myself whenever one of those things happens, I like to touch the fabric and feel the silky smoothness. Mmmm.

They have p.e. at Ida Noyes? Hrm. That would help with the ID thing, but Ida Noyes is all the way on the other side of campus. I'd have to spend an extra ten minutes walking there. That's time that could be spent knitting!

well, they probably don't anymore now that you have that fancy-pants gym. But my ballet class was there. Do they even let you sign in at the fancy pants gym?

I had to take gym during the winter term so i could graduate. and you know since winter term is only four weeks long that we had to meet every single day for 3 1/2 hours! Beginning at 8:00 am!! PLUS, i didn't know it at the time, but i was pregnant! So i'm saying I sympathize.

I had ballet at Ida Noyes. I had to take THREE quarters of P.E. That blewwwwww.

I also seem to remember taking some night dance class there with K and her roommate Amanda, but I don't remember the deal with that, or if we did that more than once.

Yeah, that was UC Dancers I think. We only did that once or twice. We didn't even have to do that. That's a lot of activity for U of C students!

Laura - That sucks! YUCK. I'm sorry you had to endure that. No one should be forced into physical activity of any kind.

Dana - Three quarters?! All I can say is good thing I cheated on that p.e. placement exam... Yes, I admit I cheated. And boy howdy I don't regret that one bit.

K - I don't know if they would have let me sign in. I should have tried that. They might have access to our photos with their new fancy pants computers.

C - Thank goodness it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I only took two quarters because there was one class that counted for two quarters. It still blew. It blew so hard that after I took the two-quarters-worth class in Fall of 1996, I couldn't work up the enthusiasm to take the final quarter until Spring of '00. That's right, I put that baby off until Minute 0.

I wish I could have cheated! I was sunk from exercise one because of the huge difference between my resting pulse and post-stairwork pulse. I could have scored 100 on the rest of the tests and I'd still have had three quarters to take. And I am in MUCH better shape now, and I STILL have a really low resting pulse and a really high active pulse. I'm almost always into the red danger area on the precor.
