Spider Web Shawl

Source: Fleisher's Knitting and Crocheting Manual, 10th edition. 1912. Page 170.

This shawl has a center stitch that is very lacy. The shawl is square with an attached lace edging.

MATERIAL--3 skeins of Fleisher's Spanish Worsted. 1 pair amber needles NO.5.

Cast on 108 stitches. Knit back. Knit 3 stitches each side for edge. These are not mentioned in directions hereafter.
Even rows are purled.
1ST Row - *Over, knit 1, over, narrow, knit 1, over, narrow.* Repeat between stars 17 times.
3RD Row - *Over, knit 3, over, slip 1, narrow, pass slipped stitch over.*
5TH Row - *Narrow, knit 1, narrow, over, knit 1, over.*
7TH Row - *Slip 1, narrow, pass slip stitch over, over, knit 3, over.*
Repeat from 1ST row until scarf is square.

LACE--Cast on 15 stitches. Knit back.
1ST Row - Knit 3, over, knit 3 together, over, knit 3, over, narrow, over twice, narrow, over twice, narrow.
2D Row - Over, knit 2, purl 1, knit 2, purl 1, knit 2, over, narrow, knit 7.
3D Row - Knit 3, over, narrow, over, narrow, purl 1, narrow, over, knit 8.
4TH Row - Bind off 3, knit 4, purl 6, knit 1, over, narrow, knit 1.
5TH Row - Knit 3, over, narrow, knit 1, over, knit 3 together, over, knit 2, over twice, narrow, over twice, narrow.
6TH Row - Over, knit 2, purl 1, knit 2, purl 7, knit 1, over, narrow, knit 1.
7TH Row - Knit 3, over, narrow, narrow, over, knit 1, over, narrow, knit 8.
8TH Row - Same as 4th row.
Repeat from 1st row until lace is long enough to go around center, allowing for corners.

EDIT!

There is an error in Row 1 of the main pattern. Also, here is a "translation" of the main body section. "Narrow" means to decrease, and I've tried to match up left and right leaning decreases (though I'm not sure if they used K2tog and SSK back in the day).

Cast on 108 stitches. Knit back. Repeat the following 8 rows until square:
Row 1: Knit 3. *Yarn over, Knit 1, Yarn over, SSK, Knit 1, K2Tog.* Repeat from * to * until three stitches remain. Knit 3.
(There is an extra Yarn over in the pattern)
Row 2, 4, 6, 8: Knit 3, Purl until last three stitches, Knit 3
Row 3: Knit 3. *Yarn over, Knit 3, Yarn over, Slip 1, K2Tog, PSSO.* Repeat from * to * until three stitches remain. Knit 3.
Row 5: Knit 3. *SSK, K1, K2tog, Yarn over, Knit 1, Yarn over.* Repeat from * to * until three stitches remain. Knit 3.
Row 7: Knit 3. *Slip 1, K2Tog, PSSO, Yarn over, Knit 3, Yarn over.* Repeat from * to * until three stitches remain. Knit 3.

There is also a problem with the edging that I am trying to figure out, but I haven't yet. Anybody take a look at it?

Comments

What does the instruction narrow mean? I'd like to try this pattern, but have no idea what to do there. I guess it's some sort of k2tog?

I have attempted this twice. For some reason I keep losing 2 stitches. (Going off the Edit version) Would love to figure out why. Anyone?
