I've been a bit distracted lately.
Sock pattern: Thelonious
Yarn: Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks That Rock Lightweight in Jail House Rock
Port: Warre's 1963 Vintage Port
Last night I went to dinner with some fellow port drinkers (there were some knitters amongst them) and drank the port. It was HEAVENLY. If I could drink that all day long, I might never knit again. There's something about drinking wine that was bottled before you were born. It's a piece of faraway tradition, not unlike knitting, shared with friends. And it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
What a great sock! I've been dreaming about what I'm going to knit when I'm done with the miter madness and the first new sock I cast on is going to be one of yours for sure!
Posted by: Cara at April 24, 2007 12:24 PMMy husband is a huge port enthusiast, so thanks for the rec!
Posted by: Heather at April 24, 2007 12:26 PMI LOVE port too! Absolutely delicious. Although it doesn't really help my knitting any. Have you tried Prager? I saw that JillyB has, it's some of the best around, IMHO. There is also an Australian port, Browns, which I’ve been on a desperate search for since trying it in New Zealand.
I have a lot of port; I'm almost embarrassed to say. Like, I don't think I have that much yarn and I will admit to a substantial stash, but I have maybe too much port. Let me know if you'd ever like to knit and drink port again, I'd be happy to bring some of mine :-)
Posted by: Jenifair at April 24, 2007 12:35 PMI can think of no two finer activities than drinking port and knitting socks. :) Especially when combined!
Posted by: Liz at April 24, 2007 1:01 PMI was wondering if Thelonius would look good in a multicolored yarn. You answered that question nicely. It's lovely.
Posted by: Nephele at April 24, 2007 1:03 PMSo great to see this design in a varigated yarn - it looks amazing!
Posted by: Kellie at April 24, 2007 1:31 PMLovely sock! Cookie, I just love all your patterns! I have Rhiannon, but I happen to have 12 other socks in progress right now, so I'm thinking fall would be a good time to start that one!
Posted by: Jamisyn at April 24, 2007 1:45 PMWhat a beautiful picture - an ode to both knitting and port lovers.
Posted by: Asaknitter at April 24, 2007 2:02 PMI love the socks. You kind of get lost looking at them, trying to see the pattern in the twisting strips...
Posted by: Jenna at April 24, 2007 2:27 PMI'm not sure which is prettier, the sock or the port...
Posted by: trillian42 at April 24, 2007 2:40 PMThelonious looks BEAUTIFUL!! Would you believe that I still don't have both of mine done? It's very true. And I think wine is supposed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :D
Posted by: shadkitty at April 24, 2007 3:56 PMLove the sock! I am not a wine kind of girl, but it sure sounds like good stuff. :)
Posted by: Teenuh at April 24, 2007 4:02 PMI wondered how my favorite pattern would look in variegated yarn and now I know - spectacular!
Posted by: Debi at April 24, 2007 8:08 PMOf course I'm too excited to remove my last name, d'oh!! Ok I'm stopping, heh! I don't know what I did different but I've been trying to post for months!!!
Posted by: Debi at April 24, 2007 8:12 PMI'm knitting the exact same sock pattern from Mountain Colors Bearfoot. I'm really enjoying it. I love seeing the way it turned out in a similarly variegated yarn.
Also, am jealous of port drinking. I love a good vintage port or 30 year port. I pretty much only drink those when with my dad (and he's buying).
Posted by: Jennifer at April 24, 2007 8:50 PMand i'm sure your tongue feels warm and fuzzy this morning.
Posted by: minnie at April 25, 2007 5:01 AMPort is just heavently - especially vintage! I love port soaked fruit with a little whipped cream. Perfect dessert!
Nice to see the pattern works with variegated yarns as well!
Posted by: [no author] at April 25, 2007 7:17 AMI **love** your socks, but in variegated yarn, eh, not so much. To my eye, the pattern gets lost in the variegation, which is a shame since your patterns are so painstakingly done with exquisite detail. I think the same thing happens with lace (except for the very simplest patterns) and variegated yarns.
Posted by: Judith at April 25, 2007 3:50 PMThe socks look great, and while I really love port I'm afraid I'd need to find a much older bottle to enjoy the thrill of drinking something bottled before I was born. But I'd sure enjoy it once I found it :)
Posted by: Misty "the Knedler" at April 25, 2007 3:59 PMAh, port and gorgeous socks. What more could a girl ask for?
It's fun to see Thelonious in a variegated yarn. That is the first of your new patterns that I plan to knit. I'd knit it just for the name, the added bonus is that the sock is really beautiful too!
gurlie, the sock absolutely rocks, and the port was divine, it made me speechless!!!! can life be better than that?!?!?! i doubt it:)
Posted by: linda at April 25, 2007 10:50 PMI love the sock! (Can't drink so am entirely clueless in this area.)
Now I know I can use my STR variegated for Thelonious whenever I get to it.
