I may have mentioned how much I love my Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in camo. You know, once or twice. I worried for quite some time about what stitch pattern would work with it, etc etc. You know what I decided? I need a mindless project. I'm going to do stockinette, and I'm going to love it.
Behold the ribbing of a sock:
And I thought I should show this because I know some of you think the 12" circular needle for a sock thing is crazy. And I admit it's not for everyone. For instance, those with small feet probably shouldn't try this ... there's only so far you can stretch your knitting. Also, the first round or two is kind of a pain. Perhaps starting on dpns or some other way and switching over to the 12" circular would work well in that case. Anyway, how much more mindless can knitting a sock be? On circular needles and in stockinette? That's mindless. I may just do an afterthought heel to stick with the mindless thing. I won't do a tube sock though. Even if it would be more mindless.
The sock ready for knitting on its 12" needle:
Oh, and can we refrain from commenting on the possible pooling? That doesn't help my zen mindless state.
Tomorrow, for yarn pr0n Friday, a quick peek into my mailbox.
I did a pair of Jaywalkers in the LL Camo - love them and love the yarn. Can't wait to see yours done.

Posted by: Marsha at November 2, 2006 12:52 PMCan't wait to see these progress. D#2 wants a pair & loves camo. I've been wanting to buy it, but it would be nice to see a real pair of socks knitted from it.
Posted by: Carol at November 2, 2006 1:28 PMActually, my preferred way to knit my socks is on two 12" circs. It's still a bit of a stretch sometimes, but it works for me.

Posted by: Sarah at November 2, 2006 2:00 PMThat does look cool! Someone blogged recently about using those super-short clover plastic needles (I have a set) for socks, but I've never seen them smaller than a size #6.
Posted by: Laura at November 2, 2006 2:01 PMfor some reason that pic makes my hands hurt!
but now of course I need to try it :)
I used 12" Addis for my Pomatomus and my Embossed Leaves Socks on 'Size 1' 12" Addi's (US Size 1.5) in LL. It really helped with the yo's for the Pomatomus socks and I'm starting to wish I'd done my ripple n' weave socks on 12" Addis - maybe I'll switch!
If you want toe-up socks, just remember that the US Sizes on your DPNS aren't going to match up to your circulars all the time. Although, this could be a good thing for making stronger fabric on the toes. I also find my gauge is a little looser when I use the 12" Addi's with Koigu, but pretty good with LL.
Posted by: moirae at November 2, 2006 2:47 PMI love the idea of 12" needles but I need a little push to try it! Maybe your awesome camo ribs will help me! :)
Posted by: Leah at November 2, 2006 3:56 PMOk, this I have to see. Please keep posting. I've always wondered why people don't knit socks in the round, but was lead to believe that it wasn't possible. I'm anxious to see how it all works out. Is this the way you usually knit socks?
Posted by: Susan at November 2, 2006 4:20 PMBecome one with the pool, the pool is cool, much cooler than simply stripes.
Posted by: yarnsnob at November 2, 2006 6:26 PMI know you said to not mention the pooling, but shouldn't socks made out of a colorway called camouflage be all about the pooling?
Posted by: Nancy Tamblyn at November 2, 2006 7:08 PMThe 12" circulars are definately the way to go. My friend has some 9" circs (vintage, likely from ebay), and I am extremely covetous of them!
Posted by: kelp! at November 2, 2006 9:53 PMOh yes, the camo. Lorna's really floats my boat. I'm trying to work out the adjective "possible" in that once sentence. Would a synonym be "denial"? I'm going to have to go with the suggestion above - it makes the camo patches, you know?
Posted by: spinnity at November 2, 2006 11:39 PMI'm in a stockinette sock phase myself right now. It is the ultimate in TV knitting!
Posted by: Kirsten at November 3, 2006 4:30 AMAs you know, I am a loyal DPN devotee, so the whole "knitting socks on circulars" freaks me out a little. But, I will admit (begrudgingly) that it looks a little easier for travelling purposes.
The camo looks awesome, I wish I had know that existed because it would have been so cool for my brother (an Army dude) for Christmas. I love the hints of orange in there....so cool!
Happy knitting, sometimes stockingnette is just what a knitter needs. :)
Mmm...I like the way the sock looks (perhaps especially with that trait I can't mention).
I think I'll need to try the 12" circular method...it would certainly make sure I don't make the sock so small it won't fit over my heel (a very dangerous and surprisingly easy mistake for me).
Posted by: G. Knerd at November 3, 2006 7:28 AMhhmmm, interesting. i've never thought to work with 12" circs. i'm a fan of the two circs method myself. how many stitches did you cast on for these socks? i can imagine that anything under 68 or 72 would be nearly impossible to work with.
Posted by: gleek at November 3, 2006 9:18 AMOooh Cookie, I knit ALL my socks on 12" Addi Turbo circs and recently purchased an 11" Baylene set on eBay. I've heard there's a 9" out there somewhere!
Here's proof: http://black-dog-knits.blogspot.com/2006/10/wtf.html

hrm...I have some 12" circs...never realized it might work for socks. They get so little use unless I'm on sleeve island...
Posted by: Juls at November 3, 2006 12:11 PMNow you're making me want size 2 12" circulars. So I can lose them too, huh? :)
Posted by: Abigail at November 3, 2006 6:05 PMBeauty! is that really Lorna's Laces Camouflage color? I thought it was less, um, purplish. Now I covet 12" circs too (I have big feet, it will all work out!)

I'm knitting a sock with my little addi turbo right now - it's regia mini ringels. I love using the little circular! the ribbing can be a pain I agree, I cast on using 2 straight needles, work 2 rows then join into the round and use the tail to join the gap. I've also found that working 3x1 rib is easier than 1x1 with the mini circ. I switch to dpns when shaping the toe. the thing I like best is no ladders!
Posted by: sarah at November 4, 2006 4:36 AMThat's it, I am trying that 12" circ thing. No ladders in my socks? I am so there.
Posted by: Bettina at November 4, 2006 7:08 AMI've often wondered about doing socks on a 12" circ... Now I know that it is done. Good thing I'm going to my LYS today. This might be the push I need to start socks (again).
The camo yarn looks awesome! (even with the pooling!)
Posted by: aimee noel at November 4, 2006 8:58 AMI adore 12" circulars. I've got 9" circs too which I love using for tiny tiny feet. I remember the first time I asked my LYS about getting my hands on 12" ers and the woman there was horrified that I would even consider using "dose tings" (she has an accent) I was kinda like, ok, whatever, I'll still use em.
Posted by: Sea Anemone at November 4, 2006 11:01 AMWow- I just bought some camo yarn to make my husband a hat! I can't wait to see what your finished sock looks like!
Posted by: Dana at November 4, 2006 3:55 PMPooling? What is this pooling you speak of? The sock she looks lovely.
