The Pre-Game
I talked to K on the phone about our strategy for Hollis's Superbowl Sale. We decided starting in the back and getting books first would be good. Luckily, most knitters aren't as obsessed with the thin gauge yarns as we are, so we probably wouldn't have much competition there. I was ready to leave at 3:20 and headed out the door. Shoot, I almost forgot to bring my credit card! Got it. Left. When I got to the store I realized I forgot my list! Oh no! Oh well, I didn't have enough hands to carry a list and yarn anyway. I walked through the store planning my exact route.
Hollis has door prizes, and I win one of them! It's one of those cute sheep tape measures that I've always liked but couldn't justify buying. I love it!
The Play by Play
I'm first in line at the back entrance. Once the whistle blows, I make a beeline for the book section and grab the last copy of Unexpected Knitting, a fairly larged sized book. I strategically use it as a base to place everything I pick up, since it is large and stable. Next to it is Shawls and Scarves - The Best of Knitters which has wonderful patterns by Gene, so I place that on top.
The needle section is next, and I grab circular 24" Inox needles in size 4, 7, and 9. And some size 35 needles to use with some ginormous yarn I bought a couple months ago.
The next play is tricky. Do I go toward the yarn, or go to the books on the opposite wall? I'm afraid placing books on top of yarn would be difficult, so I head across toward the books. Here's where I make my big mistake. I completely forget about the Kacha Kacha and the Filatura Di Crosa Zara book. SUCK! (I didn't remember about the Zara book until I got home.) So anyway, I grab a couple School House Press books - a Faroese shawl book and Handknitting with Meg Swansen. These fit nicely under the needles on top of the other two books.
Onto the yarn! K and I had decided that of the yarns we want, the Cherry Tree Hill Supersock would have the most competition, so I head there first. This is where I meet up with Kristi. She got fewer books than me, so she made it to the yarn first. I grab six skeins-African Grey, Java, Peacock, Foxy Lady, Birches, and an Earth tones one-off.
Kristi grabs six skeins in different colors. Then she goes around to the Merino Oro which I have completely forgotten and picks up a hank for me. She throws. I catch! We score! (Okay, it was more like a very gentle pass.)
I go to pick up a book that K wanted. She grabs a Lantern Moon bag from a high shelf for me. I pile up some Hand Jive Knits fingering weight on top of my growing mound of yarn. 2 each of green, pink, and lavender.
I remember I wanted some Zarina and grab that as well.
Kristi is ready to get in line! I think I am too and head for it. Oh wait, I remember I wanted some Schaefer Anne as well, so I go back for it. Pulling out one hank somehow makes others fall on the ground. I put it back. Another falls out. Yikes!
Luckily, Freesia comes and helps me put it away. My arms are quite full at this point, and I'm having a difficult time navigating through the crowd, but I somehow make it to the line. I am third (Kristi was first) when I get in it. Woot! I'm glad we were prepared. Once the line got longer, I'm not sure I would have been able to fit through the door with all my yarn to get to the end of the line!
The final score

4 books. 4 needles. 16 skeins of yarn.
The post-game
K went home to hang out with the hubby and drink. I stuck around to bask in the spectacle of it all. I was surrounded by yarn love. It was intoxicating. I loved it!!!!
SCORE! Love the game plan and the execution. Great job, one and all. Soooo, what's the final tally on the savings?
Posted by: Janice at February 5, 2006 8:36 PMI am so jealous about the shawl book! I found it way after the sale and had been toying with the idea of buying it from Schoolhouse. I'm scared of your size 35 needles! I wouldn't want to be in a dark alley with those!
Otherwise, great choices!
Posted by: Elspeth at February 5, 2006 9:46 PMHahaha ... this post completely cracked me up! Very good game plan ... I love the books you got!
Posted by: Agnes at February 6, 2006 12:11 AMWhere's a picture of the bag? Are you holding out on people?
Posted by: kristi at February 6, 2006 9:27 AMHey, I thought you were giving up on sock knitting to devote your life to non-sock knitting. WTH? (I'm jealous)
Posted by: misslunablu at February 6, 2006 4:04 PMGirl, I love my Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn. That sale was just sheer luck for me. Now I just need to buy some dpn's at Stitches West and I'll be set. Woo!
Posted by: Juls at February 7, 2006 1:16 PMMy goodness! There's definitely a tip or two in there I could use when I go yarn shopping!
