The FUBAR cabled hat

So that wool I dyed earlier this week. Yeah, that one. Okay, the one with brown/green/blue. Well, I only had enough for a hat. And I thought it would go well textured but not too textured. All the stitch patterns I tried left me unsatisfied. Really, I wanted something asymmetrical (like my haircuts), sort of cable-y, and funky. So what did I do? I'm in the process of making something only I will love, and I'm calling it the FUBAR cabled hat.

The pattern? Start with 4x4 ribbing. Then cable 4 or 8 (always following the ribbing) in front or back whenever I feel like it. It reminds me of tree roots where they're all tangled up at the base. I kinda like it. It's definitely textured...

What kind of yarn is that? Is that 4/8 or is it our other wool?

It's the other wool. And those are size 6 bamboo needles that are turning quite blue from the dye. Hrm...
