Workout: Yoga Conditioning for Athletes: Mini-workouts
Author: chaos

Skipped the workout again last night. That’s not exactly accurate… I actually ended up sleeping for close to twelve hours, and that kind of overran when the workout would most likely have been. Considered getting one in this morning, but never got around to it. So just went with the normal stretching before ultimate routine. Went with running, swimming, and all sports. After not having gotten swimming in for a while, I’m actually wondering about that order… I’m thinking I might experiment a little with having swimming first. It seems like more of a warmup than anything else, which would make sense to have first. I did extend into my stretches pretty fully today, and the right tailbone seemed okay, so that might be healed. My shoulder is still having some problems, but I think I figured out a workaround for it. Going straight out to the sides with the rotation isn’t that good, but if the shoulder is slightly in front of the plane of the body, it’s okay. It doesn’t seem to be a problem with the weight bearing postures, really. Anyway, didn’t really do much stretching afterwards, mostly because of grabbing some food. Going to try and work on that, since I know it’ll get me into trouble eventually. I pretty much feel fine right now, maybe a little tightness in the groin. I suppose it’s not quite as important on Thursday, since I have the entire weekend to heal. Anyway, going to try and rededicate myself here, especially since most of the recent injuries have healed.

Having a hard time motivating to get the workouts in right now. I’m not really sure what the problem is, other than potentially frustration over having the workouts be limited. Anyway, eventually managed to do a light abs workout today. It was actually harder than I expected, and I also noticed my shoulders a little more than expected. My left one as well… it’s mostly healed, but I still notice it periodically. Anyway, going to try to get something a little tougher in tomorrow, we’ll see how that goes.

Ended up taking the weekend off. Not for any good reason, really… was just feeling lazy, haven’t been into the workouts lately, and never got around to doing them. I felt a little bit bad about it, but not enough to actually make me do anything. Today, went for running and all sports again. I wanted to do swimming as well, but I was running late, so I decided to cut that out. Ultimate was fun, great temperature, good number of people. Not one of my better days, but that happens sometimes. Again, only very light stretching afterwards… the food thing is a little annoying, since it seems to often get in the way of a good post-game stretch. Feeling a little bit better today, so maybe I’ll start getting back to the workouts again. Obviously, tomorrow is another stretching workout, although maybe I’ll make something up, just to shake up the routine. My shoulders are feeling a little bit better for the days of rest, although the ways in which they sometimes hurt are just odd, so it’s hard to say how much rest helps them, or if a lot of rest is actually necessary for them to be fully healed. Anyway, stretching tomorrow, and hopefully something a little more exciting on Wednesday.

Well, I originally started out with the idea of doing the py:flexibility workout as a warmup today. However, after doing the first sequence, I decided my shoulder wasn’t really happy with that idea, overall, and so I ended up just dropping back to my normal running and all sports workouts. Ultimate was decent, although I had a hard time really getting my body into it. It didn’t seem like I wanted to warm up for some reason. Afterwards, I was feeling like I might stiffen up quite a bit, so I finally did some decent postgame stretching. It was very much a free form workout… I just flowed into whatever felt right. Mostly, a lot of lower body stretching. I’m guessing I’ll be a touch sore tomorrow, but I should be fine by Thursday. For a workout tomorrow, I’m going to try and get an abs workout in, since I’m a little uncertain about my shoulder status right now. Until then…

Skipped the workout again yesterday for no good reason. Motivation is just a real issue for me right now. At least, motivation for things that aren’t sitting at the computer or playing ultimate. Anyway, went with the full set of running, swimming, and all sports for the warmup today. It felt pretty good, overall… I definitely felt like I loosened up over the course of the workout. I’m still not completely happy with how my shoulder feels, but it’s not too bad. I’m actually finding that if I hold the muscles more loosely in the questionable areas (arms going up and down, mostly), it’s okay. Which is kind of interesting, but I can work with it. At least for the shorter workouts… not as sure about the longer ones. Ultimate today was decent… I made some reasonably good plays, for once. Well, I suppose I often make some, but I remember screwing up more easily. I did some of that too, but not quite as much as some other days recently. Anyway, didn’t really get any stretching in after the workout, because we hurried to get to the store before it closed, and then went to get some food. So I’ll probably be a little stiff tomorrow, but I felt much better after today’s game than I did after Tuesday’s game. Except for the fact that I jammed my pinky on my left hand. Not too badly, though, so it should heal relatively quickly. I think I might try to get a little bit of Stepmania in tomorrow and Saturday, and hopefully have some sort of workout either before or after that. We’ll see if any of that actually happens, or if I continue to be lazy. Until next time…

Workout: Abs Conditioning: Yoga

I didn’t go for anything too exciting tonight, just a simple abs yoga workout. However, the fact that I actually made myself do the workout is somewhat encouraging. I was planning on either this or abs pilates, but I had forgotten about something that I wanted to do later tonight, so I decided to go for the shorter (and less energy consuming) of the two workouts. It went pretty well… it didn’t feel nearly as difficult as last time. Not that I’m sure why last time felt so difficult, but that’s okay. Anyway, that’s really all I have to say about the workout… I’ll try and get another one in tomorrow, perhaps something like py:stamina if my shoulders feel up to it.

Well, once again ended up totally slacking and not doing a workout over the weekend. On Saturday I had a bit of an excuse, because I had a headache pretty much the entire day. Certainly, I’ve worked through that before, but those were better times. Yesterday, I was intending to do a workout, and I did actually play some Stepmania, but then I ended up not doing the workout afterwards. I really should have just done it immediately afterwards, instead of waiting until “later”. Anyway, went light again today with running and all sports. I think I’ve been hurting my shoulders while I sleep, and that’s part of why they seem to be taking forever to heal… I woke up sometime during the night to discover my right shoulder hurting quite a bit, relative to the pain I’ve been experiencing with it. I might need to strap myself down in order to keep from rolling to my sides while I sleep. Not that that’s going to happen, but it might be effective. A fairly poor performance at ultimate for me… I couldn’t seem to get my throws down today. I seem to be having that problem fairly often on Mondays… not quite sure why. Didn’t get much post-game stretching in, again. I should get better about that, at least for the next week… I’m embarking upon my ultimate ultimate week, where the intention is to play a game every day, starting today, ending next Tuesday, with the exception of Saturday. Hopefully that works out, as there are a few potential holes, particularly on Wednesday. But, it should be a fun attempt, anyway. I’ll probably go with the normal workout tomorrow, and then maybe start mixing it up over the week, since doing this same workout is already starting to get boring, and it definitely would be over the course of a week.

Went for the full running, swimming, and all sports combo twice tonight. It made for a pretty decent warmup for ultimate the first time. Ultimate went pretty well, much better than yesterday. Had some good defense, and a couple of nice catches as well. Plus my throwing was a lot more on the mark. In an amusing turn of events, the other team switched to forcing backhand for the third game, to keep me from throwing my forehand. They did end up winning that game, although I don’t think that actually had all the much to do with it… I think my team was just more worn down by that point. Anyway, wanted to get a good postgame stretch in, in anticipation of both driving tonight and playing earlier in the day tomorrow. So I went in for a second round of the mini-workouts. I was pretty happy with it as a postgame workout, as well… I felt like I managed to get reasonably well loosened up. Anyway, need to do some things and get on the road, so until tomorrow…

Had the quick transition last night, having played ultimate in the evening, driven to Chicago, and then playing ultimate again at noon today. I suppose the turnaround time for the ultimate will be an hour or so less on Thursday and Friday, but I think the driving makes up for it. Went pretty simple for the warmup, just running and all sports. Had another pretty good day, a lot of good defense. It helped that everyone else seemed to be wearing out a lot more than I was. Perhaps because I’m used to playing two hours at a time, now. Anyway, came back with a new scrape on the hip, which is rather unpleasant, but just a flesh would, and a slight strain of the right groin/inner thigh muscle. I felt that I could do something about that, so I thought for a while and decided to go with the first and last sections of the full YCfA workout. I was pretty happy with it… definitely felt like I got some good stretching in. I must have been more tired than I realized, though, because I fell asleep for a little bit at the end of the workout. Somehow, I don’t think I was staying mindful. Anyway, nothing too serious, so with another good stretch I should be ready to go for tomorrow evening.

Day 4 of the ultimate ultimate week today. For warmup, just went with running and all sports, more because of time than a desire to specifically skip swimming. The action at ultimate was more intense than I usually see… a lot more tight jumping catches, laying out, etc. It seems that I play to the level of my competition, to some degree… certainly I was playing a lot harder than normal. Actually, it was kind of nice… I’d play hard for a few points, rest for a point or two, play a few more, etc. It was good fun. I also layed out more often tonight than in the last week combined, or so it seems. Perhaps somewhat to my detriment… I noticed driving back that my right wrist seems to not be taking pressure overly well. And I think I might have wrenched my left shoulder a bit more as well… I hit the ground pretty hard at least once. Anyway, didn’t do an exact workout at the end… I did some various stretches while on the sidelines during the game, and then did some more stretching afterwards, and then a bit more after driving back. I think it worked reasonably well, although I also feel like it’s becoming more difficult to fully recover from the previous days with these workouts. Hopefully after the short turnaround for tomorrow, I’ll be able to heal up a bit with the day of rest on Saturday.

Workout: Free Form

Today’s pre-ultimate workout was interesting… neither my right wrist nor my left shoulder particularly wish to bear a whole lot of weight. In somewhat odd ways… downward dog, for instance, is pretty much fine. Perhaps it’s that weight bearing is okay, or at least somewhat okay, but shifting while weight bearing is not. Anyway, for the pre-ultimate I went with some free form, modeled after, shockingly, the running and all sports workouts. I just modified where I felt it was either necessary, or I wanted to get some extra stretching in, really. I’ve been doing a little bit of modification here and there during the workouts anyway, most often incorporating the deep lunge into the sequence somewhere, in order to get a little more of a groin stretch. Ultimate was fun… I had a fairly bad throwing day, although I think in retrospect that the wrist might be part of it, but I had an excellent catching day, making a few nice ones. Yesterday wasn’t quite as good with the catches… today if I managed to get a hand on it, it was mine. Kind of nice… sometimes I feel like my catching skills are deteriorating a bit, but then I have a good day, and it seems less like that. Anyway, did some light stretching afterwards, but not too much… I just wanted to make sure that I didn’t tighten up too badly. I’m hoping to get a light workout in tomorrow, but having the day off of ultimate will hopefully help me heal up a little. Either way, I should be ready to go again by Sunday. So until next time…

Somewhat to my surprise, I managed not to be completely lazy today. While I was expecting that at best I’d just do some really light stretching, I went ahead and got in something that kind of resembled a workout. Started out with just some normal stretching, moved into a few warrior poses, then closed with a bunch of different seated stretches. I did realize that the warriors don’t really affect my wrist at all, and my shoulder only a little, so I may start getting some more of those in during the next couple of weeks, until I manage to heal back up. Of course, backing off of the near continuous play will probably help that process quite a bit. However, since I don’t have any plans to continue this insanity past Tuesday (well, the normal Thursday game, but that’s it), backing off shouldn’t be too hard. Anyway, this ended up being a fairly decent workout, and I felt that I got some good stretching in. Now I just have to hope that the weather manages to be good enough to play tomorrow, and my ultimate ultimate week plan is in good shape.

Well, I wasn’t too sure if the game was going to happen today, since the forecast was calling for a chance of showers and thunderstorms until late afternoon. But just in case, I warmed up with the usual running and all sports. The only modification being to do warrior II instead of triangle pose, in deference to my wrist and shoulder. As it turned out, the weather held, and it ended up being a pretty nice day for ultimate, if somewhat humid. The sun even came out for a little while during the game. Just did some light stretching afterwards… wasn’t really in the mood for a full workout of any sort. So I just tried to make sure that I stretched out the legs somewhat, and called it done. Haven’t yet decided what to do about tomorrow, if I should stay here or head home. There’s some risk of rain if I head home, whereas the forecast for here is clear. But it would be more hardcore to play the longer game there, and it seems like this week is all about being hardcore in my playing, so I’m a little uncertain. Anyway, whichever way I decide, there will undoubtedly be more light stretching associated with it, so until then…

Workout: Free Form

Went with a light free form workout today for the ultimate stretch. It was mostly a combination of running and all sports, merged together in a logical fashion, with warrior II and deep lunge instead of triangle pose. Ultimate was fairly frustrating… it was a pretty windy day, which was making it difficult for anyone to throw, and very difficult for non-experienced people to complete throws. Not a whole lot more to be said, other than I should try and not let it get to me so much. Just did a little bit of light stretching afterwards… I wasn’t in the mood for an extended workout. Not sure if the lack of sports drink this week is related to that or not… could be a lack of energy after playing. Anyway, the ultimate ultimate week is almost over… heading home tonight, and tomorrow will be the final day. I haven’t injured myself too terribly much, surprisingly, although neither my wrist nor my shoulder are in great shape. But for tomorrow, undoubtedly another light stretching workout, and then perhaps abs on Wednesday.

Workout: Yoga Conditioning for Athletes: Mini-workouts

As expected, went with running and all sports for the pre-ultimate workout today. The only change to the workout was substituting warrior II for triangle pose. Ultimate went fairly decently… I was definitely more on today than I have been the last couple of days, although I was starting to fade a little at the end. However, that’s probably to be expected after that many days of ultimate. Came home and did some light stretching, mostly to try and ease the groin open, since it was feeling a bit tender. Nothing serious, it’ll undoubtedly be fine by Thursday. I have to admit, I didn’t really gain a sense of satisfaction from pulling off the week. I figured it would be kind of cool, but in the end, it was just kind of there. Which is to say, I probably won’t try it again, since it’s definitely pretty taxing on the body. Although I will admit to having fun doing it. Anyway, not sure if I’ll do a workout tomorrow… I might take a few days off here, excluding Thursday, and try and rest up a bit and recover. My right wrist is hurting more today than it has so far, but I handled more today than I had most of the week. Anyway, I’ll either get in an abs workout tomorrow, or more light stretching on Thursday.

While I wasn’t really considering today to be part of the ultimate ultimate week, I probably should have been. Of course, that makes it more like a week and a half, but that’s okay. Anyway, a free form workout to warm up. Pretty much a straight combination of running and all sports, very similar to one I did earlier in the week. I think the only real addition was backbend lunge, and of course the now normal warrior II for triangle substitution. Ultimate went pretty well today… I seemed to be fairly much on. No particular reason that I could tell, but that’s usually the case. Went straight to dinner afterwards, so I didn’t really get in any post game stretching. Which will probably cause me to be somewhat tender tomorrow, but since I’ll only do abs tomorrow, if anything, it’s probably not that big a deal. I’ll definitely be taking the next couple of days off from ultimate, and possibly from everything, in an attempt to allow my body to recover from the damage of the “week”. While I did have some fun doing it, I really don’t foresee myself doing it again, at least not as something that I’m deliberately aiming for. Anyway, that’s all for now, I’ll probably try to get an abs workout sometime over the weekend, but I’m not going to guarantee it.

Workout: Abs Conditioning: Yoga
Author: chaos

In an effort not to be completely lazy, I decided to do some abs today. Even more surprisingly, I decided to do abs after I had already done Stepmania, and after having gone for a walk earlier in the day. Not that walks usually factor into the equation at all, but I suppose it is exercise of a sort. Anyway, while I’m mostly taking it easy this weekend to try and heal up some, I figured that an abs workout should be okay, and since I’ve been slacking off on abs, I went for it. It went pretty well… there were only one or two spots where it seemed a bit problematic for either the shoulders or the wrist. Certainly not my best abs workout, but not anywhere near my worst, either. Overall, the wrist seems to be getting better, the shoulders not as much. I think the fact that I sleep on them really isn’t helping. Anyway, most likely I’ll take tomorrow off, since I doubt I’ll be up for abs again, and I’d rather just rest the joints another day than risk retarding the healing, so it’ll probably be another light workout before ultimate on Monday when I get back to it.

Monday

Workout: Yoga Conditioning for Athletes: Mini-workouts

Standard running and all sports before ultimate, with the becoming standard warrior II modification. I really didn’t expect that there was going to be a game today, since it had rained some, we were still on the alternate field, and Monday has had some trouble with draw. However, we ended up having 8, so we played a modified version of hotbox. Well, modified from the version I know, anyway. What it basically resulted in was a lot of concentrated running around. It also worked on handling skills, which is never a bad thing. Anyway, it broke up early, but it was fun while it lasted, despite the small turnout. Went to eat right afterwards, so didn’t get a whole lot of stretching in, not that I have been lately, anyway. Unfortunately, I’m not actually sure that my wrist is improving… I might start wrapping it while I’m not playing. My shoulders don’t seem to be getting better, either, but I’m less certain what I can do about that. Other than stop playing for a while, and we all know that isn’t going to happen. Anyway, hopefully there will be a game tomorrow, although the forecast looks rather ominous at the moment. If not, probably Thursday again, although I’ll likely get an abs workout in before then, particularly if we don’t play tomorrow.

Workout: Free Form

Despite a forecast of showers and thunderstorms with a fairly high probability, the weather stayed reasonable today. For my pre-ultimate workout, I did a combination of running and all sports again, with a few additions and modifications. The turnout for ultimate wasn’t very good, perhaps because people were scared off by the predicted bad weather. Although some of the people said it rained a lot where they were, so that could have been it as well. Anyway, ended up playing the entire time, which left my legs feeling a little bit beaten upon. So I went for a bit of informal stretching after the game, to try and keep them from tightening up. If I’m motivated, I’ll try and get in an abs workout tomorrow, otherwise another stretching workout on Thursday.

Thursday

Workout: Free Form
Author: chaos

Another light free form, strongly resembling a combination of running and all sports. For some reason, I’ve been having a hard time getting ready on time lately. Or at least, as early as I would like to be. Perhaps it’s because I know that I’ll probably end up having to wait, anyway. But still, it’s not a very good trend. Anyway, not too much to say. My left shoulder is really starting to annoy me. I hurt it today simply extending out to try and block the disc. Vigorously, but still, only extending out. And I didn’t even touch the disc, so that wasn’t the problem. The rest of my injuries are annoying, too. I’d just like to be whole again. Anyway. Didn’t really do much stretching afterwards, although I got in a little bit. Not too sure if I’ll do a workout over the weekend or not… the injuries don’t seem to be improving, so I might just take the time off to see if that helps. We’ll see. So until next time…
