Workout: Free Form
Author: chaos
Managed to get a decent amount of sleep. Which is good, because I’ll probably be needing it for the full day of activities planned. It’ll start off with an hour of ultimate, which will probably be somewhat embarrassing as I show off my lack of cardio fitness again. But it’ll still be a lot of fun. After that I’ll most likely be getting my DDR fix in, probably a number of hours worth.
With that in mind, I really wanted to make sure I stretched well so as to minimize the imminent soreness. I started off my workout with two runs through the sun salutation, then started going through the sun salutation and adding poses. I did a triangle, warrior I, and warrior II integrated in the sequence. Then I went into some seated forward bends, and finished off with reclining twist and relaxation pose. I wasn’t entirely happy about my breathing through the course of the workout, although it wasn’t terrible. Oh well. Anyway, I’ll probably be doing a light or stretching workout tomorrow after I overdo the physical activity today.

Workout: Yoga Conditioning for Athletes: Mini-workouts
Author: chaos
So, yesterday ending up being a little more brutal than I was expecting. Not so much in terms of the exercise, but the fact that I managed to skin myself up pretty well while playing ultimate. And of course, the 4 hours or so of DDR probably didn’t help a whole lot, either. Maybe more. There was a lot of DDR.
Anyway, I decided to go ahead and take it pretty easy with the workout today. Just do something nice and light, with a bit of a stretching element. So I went with the most basic of the mini-workout combinations, swimming and all sports. Actually, it may have been a little too light… I don’t feel like I got as stretched out as might have been nice. But I’m going to do something rare and take a warm bath, so that will probably take care of a lot of the soreness, or at least a lot of the relaxing. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get in something with a more full stretching or a good workout, whichever I’m more up for.

Well, I was still feeling fairly stiff today, although not as much as yesterday. Overall, the most annoying thing is the rather large turf-burn on my left thigh. It doesn’t really interfere with anything, it’s just kind of annoying.
Anyway, went with the light version of this workout today to get the warmup and stretching benefits without overexerting on anything. It went fairly well, although I wasn’t breathing quite as well as I’d have liked. I seemed to be a bit more flexible than usual on some of the rotated poses like triangle and side stretch, though. Actually, I felt a little more flexible all over today, which seems a little bit strange, because at the same time I was sore. Not sure what to think about that. Let’s see… my knee has been improving fairly steadily, but it’s not completely healed yet. I’d say in maybe another week it’ll be mostly there, provided I don’t so anything to make it worse in the meantime. I might try and get an abs workout in tomorrow, just because it’s been a number of days now since the last one. Until then…

Workout: Abs Conditioning: Pilates
Author: chaos
Man, this is one tough workout. Every time I think that my abs are getting stronger, and that I’m really going to be able to handle this workout, it knocks me down again. I wasn’t too sure how today was going to go when I started, but I felt like my abs were pretty rested, so it should go reasonably well. Unfortunately, it also seems like I’ve been taking too much time off from this workout. It actually started out quite well, wasn’t feeling the effects yet heading into the series of five. Unfortunately, as usual, by the time I got to the other side I was pretty much groaning and my abs felt severely beaten. I managed to continue on with fairly decent form for the rest of the workout, but it’s still just not up to the level that I’d like. I’m actually wondering if I should go back to making yoga for abs my standard for abs workouts until I can get my breathing form more consistently where I want it to be. I did okay today, but it was a constant effort to keep track of it as I attempted to do the moves. Anyway, a rather hard but useful workout today… not really sure what I’ll do tomorrow, maybe something in the power yoga series.

I wasn’t quite happy with my workout today. I’m not quite certain what it was… my breathing was fairly decent, and my concentration was okay. Maybe it was just the fact that I was still feeling some stiffness, either from Friday or from one of the workouts I’ve done in the past few days. Maybe it was the focus… it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t really good, either. I think, overall, I just felt somewhat stiff and out of it for the workout, and it just contributed to a general feeling of dissatisfaction. Oh well. Hopefully I’ll be able to come back with a slightly better workout tomorrow, start getting back into the groove I had a week or two ago.

Workout: Yoga for Strength: session 1
Author: chaos
A relatively satisfying workout today. Breathing was fairly good, motions were good. I liked my downward dog, although the two minute one was almost too long. I have that problem every time I make adjustments to it, though. Shoulderstand didn’t go quite as well as it has been recently, though. I just didn’t feel like I ever got set up quite right. Not sure what’s up with that. I must need more sleep or something, though, because I was dozing off in relaxation pose at the end. I guess I was both fairly relaxed and fairly tired. Not sure what I’ll get to tomorrow… depends on how I’m feeling, I suppose. I was kind of tired today before the workout, but this one sounded good. Anyway, until tomorrow, then.

Workout: Power Yoga: Strength

Another reasonable workout. I’ve been having some trouble lately getting into the workout mentally, perhaps because I’ve had a lot of other stuff going on. However, that’s all pretty much done for the moment, so hopefully I can manage to reclaim some mental space.
Today’s workout was pretty good physically, though. I was definitely a little more tired by the end than I would have expected, but that may be because I’m continuing to work on my technique for a few of the poses. Right now, I’ve been working on the pushup pose and downward dog. Not going down as far in pushup pose while holding oneself straight leads to a much greater workout for the triceps. I think it also helps for upward dog, although I’ve been feeling like my upward dog has been a little compressed lately. It probably always has been, and I’ve just never noticed. Anyway, a decent workout, and hopefully another good one tomorrow with a little more mental focus.

Workout: Abs Conditioning: Yoga
Author: chaos
A fairly laid back workout today. I did a much better job with keeping my abs scooped while I was going through the workout than I did with the pilates workout. Which isn’t surprising… it’s a much slower workout, for one, and so it’s easier to keep that detail in mind. I’ve also been working a little bit on using the ujjayi breath again. I had pretty much forgotten about it for a long time, but it feels like it fits in pretty well with the sequence of breathing into the lungs, exhaling by pushing the abs up and in. So I think I more or less spontaneously remembered that in the last few weeks. Also, doing the workout with the focus on the breath didn’t feel like it worked my abs quite as hard as it did last time, so perhaps it’s a sign they’re getting stronger. Anyway, that’s all for the moment… hopefully something good tomorrow, maybe yoga conditioning for athletes.

I was feeling pretty laid back and relaxed this evening, at least relatively speaking, so I decided I’d just take it easy with a little flexibility workout. I actually considered doing a stamina workout, but I decided that would probably be a little bit lighter than I was actually looking for. I think the choice was pretty good, overall… while my concentration wasn’t really any better than it has been in the last couple of days, I thought that my breathing was pretty good, and my movements felt very full. My knee seems to be mostly healed, although hopefully I didn’t overextend it tonight. I did feel it twinge at one point, and although I got out of the pose immediately, it’s hard to say if that set me back or not. I’ll probably go for the standard balanceball abs workout tomorrow, but I’ll have to wait and see to be sure.

Workout: Abs Conditioning: Balanceball
Author: chaos
One of the things that I’m really enjoying about my abs workouts lately is that I’m always feeling the effects of the workout while I’m doing it. I don’t really have days where it doesn’t seem like I worked my abs. The particular area in which my abs feel the most worked varies by workout and by day, but it constantly feels like I’m making some sort of improvements.
I think the balanceball workout really concentrates on the deep lower abs for me. Perhaps because the rest of my abs are more worked by the other workouts, that’s the only area I really tend to notice. Today, I definitely noticed. I think I was doing a better job of maintaining neutral spine while doing the exercises lying on the floor. Overall, the building up of the abs seems like a very slow process, but with continual improvements, I imagine that satisfactory results are simply a matter of time.

I really wish I were a little bit better at making myself go to sleep. I ended up being awake way later than I wanted to be again last night. After getting slightly less than three hours, I pried myself out of bed so that I could get the workout in and still have time to shower before heading out. Not much to say about the workout, really… I felt that my breath flow was pretty good. I didn’t do a particularly fast or slow paced workout, just kind of worked through the way I was feeling. Nothing too exciting… a few runs through sun salutation, added in a triangle and a warrior I. Finished off with some seated stretches. I’ve been feeling a bit frustrated lately, because it seems as though I’m getting nowhere with increasing my hamstring flexibility. I’m sure that I am, but it’s hard to see sometimes. Oh well. Hopefully I’ll get a little more sleep tonight, and a good workout in late tonight or tomorrow.

Workout: Power Yoga: Total Body
Author: chaos
Well, I made some sort of effort to get up a little earlier today. I mean, I did actually get up a bit earlier, but wasn’t really in much condition to start the workout. While I did manage to get more sleep last night, I fear that it still wasn’t really sufficient for my needs. So after stumbling around for a bit and waking myself up, I started the total body workout. I knew that I wouldn’t have time to do the whole thing, or even my normal shortened version, but none of the other workouts were really appealing to me.
I think it went pretty well… I was relatively focused throughout the workout, although still far from completely focused. But it was better than I have been lately. My breath seems like it’s been doing really well, although I’m wondering if that’s because I haven’t been paying quite as much attention to it, and so I’m missing when it’s off. Something to monitor a little more closely in the next few workouts. I suppose I’ll try again tomorrow to get a strong workout in, or at least a mentally focused one.

Woke up pretty early this morning. I was hoping to get back to sleep for a while, but that ended up not happening. So after just lounging about for a while, I went for the workout. I was really in the mood for something fairly fast paced, so this felt like a pretty good choice. It went pretty well… I was paying a little more attention to my breathing, and while I’m definitely pretty close, I’d like to be a little more active on exhaling up and in. So it’s something that I’ll continue working on. Other notes… I had an interesting crane pose. It was very solid, but felt a little different than when I normally do it. No idea if it was better or worse, really. I think simple arm balance is much easier to do on hardwood. I’ve gotten pretty good at it anyway, but it felt really good today. Side arm balance, on the other hand, is more difficult on hardwood, for me, anyway. I’m putting too much pressure on my palm. I need to even it out a little, perhaps by having my arm a little further out from my shoulder, or perhaps a little closer. I’ll have to practice it at some point so I can get the adjustment. Closer seems more natural, but I think that goes against what the pose is theoretically supposed to be like, so I’ll have to check that out. Anyway, I think I’ll probably try for an abs workout tomorrow, maybe even pilates again.

I really did not want to get out of bed this morning. Insufficient sleep and long hours have definitely started to catch up with me, and waking up this morning was quite difficult. Well, the waking up part wasn’t too bad, but motivating to get out of bed wasn’t easy. But after much huddling under the covers, I finally convinced myself to get up and get the workout in.
It went fairly well… I started off by doing a motion style sequence, much like the swimming mini-workout. After a few quick runs through the sun salutation, I started slowing it down a bit to get a good long stretch on a triangle pose and a side stretch pose. Then I did a long stretch in standing forward bend, another sun salutation and finished off with cobbler’s pose, a long seated forward bend, and relaxation pose. Overall, I was pretty happy with it, especially the stretching aspects. Not sure what I’ll get in tomorrow, it will probably depend on if I decide to play ultimate or not.

I had quite a bit of trouble sleeping last night for some reason. Although I went to sleep fairly late, especially given that I was short on sleep for the entire week, I still woke up over two hours before the alarm was scheduled to go off. I do that fairly often, but I can usually get back to sleep without too much trouble. Today, I just wasn’t sleeping well after that, and ended up getting out of bed half an hour before the alarm would have gone off. That’s probably going to make driving home tonight a little more difficult, but I’ll have to deal with that when the time comes.
Anyway, the workout. I wasn’t overly happy with my focus today… too much external stuff going on around me, I guess. But the overall motion was fairly good. I was again going for a stretching workout before ultimate, with a bit more motion in order to warm up my muscles.
Ended up doing five sun salutations in total, working in a triangle pose, a warrior II, and a triangle pose to half moon pose. The half moon wasn’t all that good… I last did it on hardwood, and it’s considerably more difficult to get the balance on carpet. Then I did some leg stretches to finish out the workout. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, but I’m sure the workout will be later in the day, hopefully after a decent amount of sleep.

Well, I have managed to get some sleep in the past 12 hours or so, but I’m still pretty tired. Apparently I need more time for sleeping in on the weekends or something. Anyway, despite my fatigue I decided to get this workout in before the very end of the day, and hopefully start having slightly better workouts that way.
I guess there isn’t too terribly much to say about today’s workout… I chose it in order to stretch out after yesterday’s activities, although I have to admit that I didn’t feel too badly today. I made a point of doing some forward bends after finishing DDR yesterday, and I think that helped out a lot. I think that having done that sequence just two weeks ago helped as well, since my body hadn’t yet forgotten about that. Anyway, today’s workout was fairly decent… I felt the stretching went well, especially since I didn’t feel that I was overly tight to begin with, like I often am after activity days. I do feel like I’m starting to make some progress in the flexibility stages overall, which is nice. Hopefully I’ll keep up the trend of not getting my workouts in so late, and having better workouts for it.

Workout: Yoga Conditioning for Athletes: Mini-workouts
Author: chaos
Ended up going with some more of the mini-workouts today. I haven’t had many situations lately where one of the workouts really struck me as the one that I wanted to do, so it’s been quite a bit of a toss up lately which one I end up doing. My partner didn’t want to do abs, so that was out. Other than that, though… everything was pretty much fair game. I started out thinking about yfs:s1, but decided I wasn’t really quite in the mood for that. So I ended up going with a mini-workout sequence.
I did running, swimming and all sports today. It felt pretty good, although I don’t know that my quads got as much of a stretch as I would have liked. I definitely felt like my hamstrings were fairly well stretched, though, which was nice because they had definitely tightened up a little since yesterday. I wish I could figure out how to keep them more lengthened… maybe by doing yoga every twelve hours or something. Too bad that’s not a realistic possibility right now. Anyway, I think I’ll try and get a workout in during the early afternoon tomorrow, start getting a little more aggressive about getting my workouts in, and maybe get multiple ones in some days.

Workout: Yoga Conditioning for Athletes

Went in for the full YCfA workout today. Well, not exactly the full workout. That was the original plan, more or less, but then decided to skip over most of the middle section. So the workout ended up consisting mostly of stretching, a little warming up, and more stretching. Not that it’s a bad thing… I admit that I had no real inspiration for any workout today, so a bunch of stretching was probably just as good as anything. Still, it feels like I’ve been slacking off a little bit these last few days, taking it a little too easy. I don’t know. On the other hand, it doesn’t seem like I’ve been eating too much the last few days, like it has on some other occasions recently, so that’s a bit of a balance, I suppose. Maybe one of these days I’ll manage to align all of the elements, but I’m not going to hold my breath until that happens.

Workout: Abs Conditioning: Yoga

Very moody and pensive tonight. Not really sure why… I suppose it just happens sometimes. Or fairly often. Anyway, decided to go with an abs workout both because I haven’t done one in a while, and because I often find it somewhat more relaxing than other workouts. I think the slow movements and stronger focus help. Anyway, it went fairly well. I was somewhat relaxed during the workout, but the effects were already fading by the end, and pretty much disappeared right afterwards. Oh well. Hopefully I’ll manage to get over it fairly soon and get some work done, maybe breaking out tomorrow for a more serious workout.

Managed to get a rare mid-day workout in today. I’ve been wanting to start doing that more often, because it either frees up the rest of the day, or allows me to get a second workout in later in the day. I’m hoping to start migrating back towards doing more than one workout in the day, but I’m not certain I’m quite ready to get back to that yet. We’ll have to see how it goes.
Today’s workout was fairly routine. I’ve been noticing that I’m overextending a bit on the wide angle forward bend, so I toned that down a little. Sometimes my jumps into pushup pose work really well, but most of the time they just get me there. I’m fairly happy with my triangle pose lately, it’s been fairly consistent with regards to my ability to torque my waist and look up. I think my flexibility there is improving. I may start trying to get little mini sessions in even when I can’t do a full second workout, mostly just stretching my hamstrings. I think if I start lengthening them more often, they’ll start retaining that length more. That’s my current theory, anyway. As always, updates as events warrant.

I was kind of feeling like doing a free form workout today, but was afraid that I’ve been avoiding doing this workout too much. In the end, I ended up doing a little of each. I started out by following the video through the eight pose sequence, and then jumped into the stretching segment. But instead of following along with the video at that point, I just started doing the stretching that I wanted to do. I held a few long single leg stretches, as I was hoping to really work the hamstrings a little bit. I avoided doing a number of the stretches tonight because I feel that I’ve been overdoing them a bit in the last week or two. Not so much to the point of actual pain, but I think I’m starting to feel the effects of accumulating wear and tear. So I think I’ll be trying to take it a little easier on some things the next few days, rest up a little. Maybe going into an abs week or something, where I primarily do abs workouts. I’m sure I’ll come up with something, anyway.

In keeping with my thoughts of yesterday, decided to get in another abs yoga session today. My abs just don’t seem to be recovering quite as quickly as they used to, but then again, nothing does, really. Probably largely a matter of diet… one of these days I really have to dedicate myself to eating a little better. Just because it’s one of those things that if I don’t focus on, it won’t improve. Anyway, today’s workout was pretty similar to the abs workout of a few days ago. I think I’m getting a little better with holding my abs taut, even during the final boat pose. Always nice to see at least a little improvement. Other than that, not much to say. My focus really hasn’t been all that good the last few weeks, so I need to really try and focus to get back to a good state with that. I think I’ll probably try and get a light workout in later tonight, possibly py:stamina.

Workout: Power Yoga: Total Body

Had one of my best workouts in a long time tonight. My partner wanted to do total body again, so that’s what we went with. I was a little uncertain, having just done it the other day, but it definitely worked out well for me. The beginning started out pretty much as normal, warming up and stretching. But as it started to move into the more sophisticated poses, I made an effort to maintain a certain level of relaxation in my muscles as I went through the workout. That seemed to help a lot. I was quite present for the workout today as well, aware of my motions and how I was holding myself. In an effort to continue improving, I had my partner evaluate both my warrior III and my upward bow, and both were rated as being pretty good. So I think that I am continuing to make progress, at least slowly. For the stretching/cool down segment, I mostly followed along, but made a few modifications in order to allow my knees to rest a little more. I think the outside of my left knee has pretty much healed, but I may have to push it a little bit so that it stops twinging at the end of its range. The inside of both knees have been feeling a bit worn lately, though, so I’m laying off a few of the stretches, particularly the one-legged forward bend, for a week or so. Anyway, today was a pretty good workout, I’ll most likely go for abs balanceball tomorrow.

Workout: Power Yoga: Stamina
Author: chaos
Well, I was originally planning on doing a balanceball workout today. But I wasn’t particularly motivated by that idea, especially after waking up with my back being rather tender. I suppose that as good as the workout yesterday was, the fact is that I’ve been somewhat negligent of it lately, and particularly the backbend segment. So while I’m sure it was good overall, it did leave me feeling a bit abused today.
With that in mind, I decided that I’d rather just get a fairly light workout in, something to warm up and stretch out a little, but not really strain anything. So I went to my favorite choice for that, stamina. I think it worked decently… I don’t know if I got as much stretching in my back as I might have liked, but I did get to stretch out my hamstrings pretty well, which were also a little tight. I really need to start working on my idea of stretching them out more often, even if I’m not going to do a full workout, and see if that helps. Since they’re tight/stiff almost every time I do a workout these days, so perhaps if they were given a little less time to tighten up it would help. Anyway, I’ll almost certainly go for a morning workout tomorrow, maybe yfs:s1, but quite possibly just a free form session.

Did the anticipated free form workout this morning. I’ve recently been thinking that I’ve been taking it a little too easy with these workouts, so I decided to try and add in a little more challenge. To that effect, I did some more difficult poses than I usually sequence in, particularly half moon and simple arm balance. I had a problem with simple arm balance today… I think I was trying a little too hard, perhaps moving too quickly into the pose. I tried it a second time, which went better, but then I moved too quickly again and fell backwards. The half moons were decent, although I’d like to open up a bit more with them. I feel I’m still holding myself a little closed in order to keep balance. Other than that, just tried to stretch out my hamstrings. I think I’ll try and get a little stretching in tonight, perhaps even a few sun salutations, even if I don’t do a full workout until the morning.

Workout: Abs Conditioning: Yoga

Eventually managed to roll out of bed and get the workout in this morning. It was fairly tough… once again, I was up later than I really should have been. But as usual, I convinced myself that I needed to get up so that I could get the workout in. It’s a good thing I have that, some mornings… getting up just so I could go to work wouldn’t be nearly as motivating. But the need to get the workout in gets me out of bed.
I went pretty low key again today… I was really feeling kind of tired, and also like I hadn’t gotten an abs workout in during the last few days. I need to get back to doing the pilates abs workout (and really, the pilates workouts in general). I guess I’ve just been in a mood for yoga recently. Anyway, the workout went well… I feel like I’m continuing to strengthen my abs. Of course, when I hit the pilates workout next time, I’ll probably feel differently.
As an added bonus, and as per my recent thoughts on extra stretching, I also got in a mini-workout last night. Originally, I was just going to do some serious stretching of the hamstrings and not much else, but when I managed to convince mlee to join me for the workout, I decided to go ahead and expand it a little. So it became my first directed yoga workout, at least where I wasn’t just following one of the workouts from memory. I think it went fairly well… ran through a couple sun salutations, did a triangle pose and a warrior II, and then finished off with a bit of stretching and relaxation. He seemed to like it, so that was good. Maybe I’ll be able to get him to do workouts a little more often if I’m doing at least mini ones in the evening. Anyway… so the workouts are going fairly well, but it’s probably going to be a long day once the initial awake period wears off.

Due to some great foolishness on my part, I didn’t end up going to sleep until about four hours after I should have. This, of course, caused a rather notable lack of sleep, and was reflected in my great reluctance to get out of bed. Frankly, I think another three hours of sleep would have done wonders, but that’s the price I pay.
With that in mind, I didn’t have too much time for the workout today, but I did manage to get a fairly solid workout in anyway. Unfortunately, I didn’t do my stretching last night, so I started out a bit more stiff than I really would have preferred. But I managed to work through that fairly quickly, and get some solid stretching in. I went away from some of my normal poses, and instead went with an extended side angle pose and a crane pose as the highlights of my workout. I was pretty happy with the crane pose… fairly solid. Anyway, likely another free form workout tomorrow morning, although perhaps I’ll attempt to sneak an abs workout in tonight, depending on how awake I still am at that point.

Somehow the alarm clock that I was using last night had the time set off by twelve hours. Strangely, though, I woke up at the exact time that the alarm was supposed to go off. After lying in bed for a short while longer, I managed to convince myself to get up and get to the workout.
I got in a little bit of stretching last night, so I started off a little less stiff in the hamstrings than I often do. I varied things up a little today… still all based on the sun salutation sequence, of course. Today I integrated warriors I and II in addition to triangle.
I also threw in a few transitions through powerful pose, which I really haven’t done much at all in my free form workouts. Then I decided to segue into a bit of an abs routine, doing a few of the exercises from there. As usual, finished off with relaxation pose. I’m not entirely certain I’d say it was a good workout, but it was a different one, and definitely a bit of an expansion of my normal free form routine. Quite likely another free form tomorrow, and then probably back to videos for a while.

I changed things up a little bit today, and took my mat with me to ultimate, doing a workout before everyone else got there. It was kind of cool to do a workout in a very open area where there’s absolutely no danger of hitting anything with my arms. And since it was indoors, there was no sunlight to contend with, or cold. Not that it was that cold out, but it wasn’t that warm, either.
Anyway, it was a reasonable workout. A few sun salutations, triangle pose and side stretch, warriors I and II. Long seated forward bend, and single leg stretch finished out the workout. Breathing was pretty decent if not spectacular. Should be back with the normal workouts again tomorrow for a little while.

Workout: Power Yoga: Flexibility

As usual, I managed to acquire a few injuries from ultimate yesterday. I mostly managed to stay off the ground this time, and only have one minor burn from the turf. But I bruised my right hip and the big toe on my left foot to make up for that. I also bruised the sole of my right foot, but I’m not sure if that was from ultimate or DDR. Or a combination thereof. Lest anyone wonder why I do this to myself, I can only say that it’s a lot of fun while it lasts.
At any rate, all of this made for a slightly more painful workout than usual. My right foot didn’t like being the back foot in a lunge very much, and the left foot was definitely less than fond of upward dog. I’m not too worried about the right, since that should be normal in a day or two, but the left could get a little annoying. Hopefully that heals quickly as well. But I managed to work through all of that to get the workout in. I certainly wouldn’t call it a great workout, since I undoubtedly spent way too much time thinking about these various injuries and how to minimize pressuring them. But it was fairly solid, and did get some stretching in, which hopefully helped with the sore muscles a little. I guess I forgot to mention those earlier. The only thing it didn’t do much for is the upper back, but I’d really need to do a different workout for that. I’ll probably try and do something like abs tomorrow, to stay off of my feet for the most part during the workout and give them some time to heal.
