Today the hubby and I went up to Carolina Homespun so I could pick out some fiber. I've been wanting to play with color, different preps, and different kinds of wool. So I picked out a few:
Honestly, I'm not sure what kind of wool this is. Corriedale, I think. Hm. Not the best for wanting to learn more about the fibers, not knowing what it is. But the colors are pretty cool.
This one is merino in the Twilight colorway. It's pretty dark, with blacks, dark blue, purple, and some gray. Merino is supposedly not the easiest to spin, but it's all a learning experience, right?
Finally, some teal (of course). I should admit that at first, all the wools I had picked out were teal in some way, but I put them back (mostly) because I wanted to experiment with color, not just spin all of the same color.
Sorry, I decided not to take it out of its plastic bag just yet. This one is a Romney, and is carded rather than combed like the other 2. Supposedly carded like this is easier for beginners than combed. I guess I'll find out!
Oooo, fiber-porn... Merino is "supposedly" hard to spin, but I know I'm not the only person who has learned on it, and I found it quite agreeable... It likes to be thin, and it spins fast (and the colorway you have looks oh-so-gorgeous!!!)
Good luck, let us see how it goes!
Have you been to Carolina H before? Pretty cool place - I'd love my garage to be crammed full of stuff just like that! Nice fiber - have fun, it wd. be cool to see how they get spun.
Posted by: Terry at August 27, 2006 9:13 PMI LOVE Carolina Homespun! Sadly, I just moved away from it. I miss Morgaine already. -_-
The first roving you posted looks an awful lot like the Ashland Bay roving I have. If so, it's Colonial. (They also sell this roving at ImagiKnit in San Francisco. Just a quick plug, since I used to work there.)
Posted by: Maria at August 27, 2006 10:09 PMSo nice! I was thinking about trekking to CH... is it a real store you can just pop into like that? Good to know (I'm stoking a minor fiber addiction right now, trying to keep it under control with CH so "close" may be tough though.)
Posted by: Aija at August 28, 2006 2:44 AMI am trying to spin some merino now. It's a little more slippery compared to BFL or Corriedale. I LOVE the deep blue/purple fiber you got. Gorgeous! They are all really nice. Have fun spinning them up.
Posted by: Karen at August 28, 2006 6:13 AMOoooooh, nice roving, really beautiful colors. I have some merino roving that I was finding a little trickier than other roving, I thought it was just my beginniner ineptitude - but then tried the 50/50 silk/merino and was in spinning heaven.
Posted by: Schrodinger at August 28, 2006 10:09 AMI found combed easier to spin than carded at first. Not that I'm a great spinner. Someone told me once that you have to "practice" (a diplomatic word for "ruin") on at least one pound of fiber before you get the hang of it. Many, many pounds later, I realize she lied.
Posted by: francesgoodman at August 28, 2006 10:19 AMWhat gorgeous fiber! I adore Corriedale too. I particuarly love the green you got.
Posted by: Opal at August 28, 2006 2:10 PMThat looks exactly like some fiber I have in stash, and it is corriedale. I just love it, but haven't spun any of it up yet.
Posted by: Rebekah at August 28, 2006 2:24 PMohhh what beautiful colors Love the twilight especially!
