Project Runway Hat

[Edited to add smaller size and to fix pattern error.]

As you may know by now, I am a Project Runway junkie. Ever since I saw this knitted hat by Kara Janx, I have been wanting my very own.

I scoured Stitches for the perfect yarn and found this. It's Ozark Handspun that I got from the Imagiknit booth. It's a bit pricy (~$25) but worth the Project Runway love.

Ozark Handspun

The hold up has been a lack of jumbo sized needles. Well, I finally got some and whipped up a hat. Here's a bad picture.

Project Runway Kara Janx Hat

Front Side Back

Pretty close, eh? My yarn is little bit heavier on teal/purple side, but I love it. Oh yeah, and I read this interview with Kara Janx, and it looks like she got her yarn from Purl Soho. And yep, looking at their bulky yarns, I'm pretty sure it must be the Ozark Handspun.

The pattern is really simple.

NOTES: I used every last inch of yarn for the size M/L. If you have a less ginormous head (mine is about 22 inches around at the widest angle), you probably want to cast on fewer stitches or knit one less plain round. The smaller size should fit a 19" head. If it seems tight at first, it *will* stretch. The yarn is also a bit annoying to knit. Be prepared for that.

Size M/L.

Using size 17 double pointed needles, cast on 28 stitches and join in the round.
Round 1: *K1, P1, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 2-4: Same as Round 1.
Round 5-11: Knit plain.
Round 12: *K5, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 13: *K4, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 14: *K3, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 15: *K2, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 16: *K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Draw yarn through last stitch and remaining stitches.

Size Small. This one is smaller around and taller.

Using size 17 double pointed needles, cast on 24 stitches and join in the round.
Round 1: *K1, P1, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 2-4: Same as Round 1.
Round 5-13: Knit plain.
Round 14: *K4, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 15: *K3, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 16: *K2, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 17: *K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Draw yarn through last stitch and remaining stitches.

Very cool. Wise choice to leave off the ear flaps, or whatever those are. I want the dress, myself.

Fun! I have to confess that I watch Project Runway if I happen to run across it while surfing--it's like reality tv with style. I don't know who won this time and don't want to if it's the hatest Santino.

Well I can't say I like the hat, a little too funky for me, but then again we don't all have to like the same things, but it's great that you were able to make it for yourself after seeing something and liking it. Knitting nis such a wonderful art.

Your version of Kara's hat is very cool! I can't wait for Wed. night to see the final winner. It's one of the few times that hubby and I are in total agreement over what to watch - actually, he was the one who got me hooked!

Wow, thanks for posting this, the hat looks awesome. I'm definitely going to make this (as soon as I'm done with my other projects, of course)! Now about copying that gorgeous dress...
