Gardening strategery
Yesterday I did some gardening to herald the vernal equinox. Since I only have a porch and no yard space in my current apartment, this involves buying some pots, lots of soil, and whatever seeds struck my fancy. As this is something I’ve been hoping to accomplish for weeks, it feels good to have at least begun the process.
I am such a Darwinian gardener. I know I put far too many seeds in a given square inch of soil, but I figure the recommendations are for those with the luxury of having space to really create an ideal plot. For my porch, I have three rather large pots in which I put a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Since I am not sure what will be suited to the climate here, I figure plenty of the seeds sown will just die out silently. I worry there will be a space war with too many plants competing for one location, but in that case I can just transfer some to new pots. Actually, in this eventuality I end up getting a good return on the (minimal) effort invested so it would not be so bad. The one disappointment was that I could not find any tomato or eggplant seeds, but those can be added later.
Next addition to ponder: can I fit a hammock on the porch, and if I can, will I ever want to leave it?
