we now return you to your regularly scheduled
Crave’s parents, sister, and brother-in-law came over today for HIS BIRTHDAY! Happy Birthday, baby. I hope this is your best one yet.
They all came to my show, which was pretty nervewracking, because it’s never easy to anticipate what parental types will think of theatre. Seriously. This isn’t particularly out there, in the grand scheme of things, but you never know. Thankfully, they seemed to enjoy it, which was a relief. They got to meet LoveCat and see the apartment for the first time since it officially became my home too.
In other parent news, I have lived in this city for just shy of four years, and my family has never been out here. In two weeks, that will change. My little brother is flying out to stay with us for a few days while my parents road trip from Illinois. While I’m super-excited for my family to see where I live for the first time, I am also a little wary of the whole thing. Seattle has always been a parents-free zone… and in a way, I kind of liked that. Of course, I also really wanted them to meet Crave, and this is the only real way that could happen in the forseeable future.
My little brother wants me to help him get a tattoo while he’s out here. Heh, heh, heh. Maybe that’ll be his belated high school graduation present.
SO. What do I do with an 18 year old boy and two rather unadventurous parents for a week? Any ideas?
DUDE, you are so thorough. Some of those hadn’t even occurred to me - especially since I only recently went to the zoo for the first time myself. Thanks!
wow, that is brilliant.
Your suggestions were great too, Nen. And apparently, my little brother can’t afford how expensive a tattoo would be out HERE, so he is giving up on the idea… which is sort of a relief.
also
wouldn’t it suck for him to get his first tatoo on his family’s only visit out to see you in 4 years?
they’ll blame you even more than they would ordinarily.
and that’s not cool
Indeed. That was why I was dubious about the situation all along. On the other hand, he has GOT to stop accepting the lifestyle of “Parental Pawn”, and anything I can do to help him break out of that will probably help him out in the end. In any case, it’s a moot point now that he’s realized how expensive it will be, and I don’t have to worry about it anymore. Woo hoo!
NO WAY is your brother 18! Isn’t he like, 10? I mean, come on. Leave a girl some of her illusions.
;)
Enjoy your family’s visit. My mom came out to the NO for Mother’s Day. It’s surprisingly nervewracking, when they walk into YOUR HOUSE for the first time. I’d done it before in Champaign, but it hit me again here.
Love you!
like, dude…
don’t we get updates?!?!?!
Well, if you really want to do the full Seattle Tourist agenda, here are my suggestions:
Day One:
Pike Place Market, (eat anywhere there - Lowell’s or The Athenian have the best views, but Emmett Watson’s has the best fried seafood bang for the buck ratio), Monorail (assuming it’s running by then), Westlake Mall.
Day Two:
Seattle Center/Space Needle, maybe ride a Duck, then South Lake Union (esp. Center For Wooden Boats), lunch at Chandler’s Cove, Cucina Cucina or TGI Friday’s.
Day Three:
Ballard, The Locks (lunch at The Lock Spot), Shillshole.
Day Four:
Walk-on ferry to Bainbridge, Winslow, lunch at The Streamliner Diner.
Day Five:
International District, Pioneer Square, lunch anywhere either place, although I recommend Ocean City for dim sum or the New Orleans. Larry’s, The J&M or Merchant’s Cafe for the less adventurous. The Russian Sub down at the South end of the Waterfront.
Day Six:
Argosy Cruise of Lake Washington, lunch at Harborside (or if you time it right, the $1.95 Happy Hour appetizers are worth the wait).
Day Seven:
Woodland Park Zoo. Lunch at Red Mill Burgers on Phinney.
