hanging my head in shame

Just a brief moment of silence for the total idiot I’ve become in my old age. Despite going to high school here, I find that I am now officially totally unqualified to apply for this job. I have forgotten a lot of things in the past few years - that, and between AB Calculus and Integrated Science, I kinda got screwed. Sigh.

Nah. I wouldn’t be ashamed much. But that’s just me.

I don’t think I could do an integral if my life depended on it…

vince @ 10:06 PM | 2003/01/23

There should be no shame - everything atrophies. Besides, you’re in good company…the extent of my calculus knowledge is now contained in some textbook stuffed in some random box.

Did they tell you you were unqualified, or you just feel like you are? Maybe it’ll come back to you if you take a look at it?

mlee @ 03:01 AM | 2003/01/24

Nope. I never knew the ACTUAL phys/chem to begin with, and it would take a lot of studying to resurrect any knowledge from AB.

freesia @ 09:25 AM | 2003/01/24

I don’t know, Alicia. I felt totally lost in calculus, too, but then when I look at the old books, I understand it pretty well. It’s like, maybe it was just hard because we were always learning new stuff, and the reason we felt so stupid is because we never went back and tried the old stuff. You may remember more than you think…

If I had a kid, I would definitely trust you to tutor them in math and science. Besides, at least you have something on your resume that qualifies you.

Casie @ 11:53 AM | 2003/01/24

You’re probably right. But honestly, off the top of my head, I don’t remember a damn thing. Not from that whole year of AB in high school, not from the semester I took in college, nothing. I could probably DO it again, but tutoring it requires a much more serious knowledge of it than I think I have left in my brain.

As for Integrated, that was a total wash. I don’t know any formulas at all. No physics, no chemistry, no biology (beyond what I learned in Traina’s biodiversity class two years later.) What good is it going to a math and science academy when you somehow manage to retain/learn no math/science?

freesia @ 12:34 PM | 2003/01/24

I always thought it was about imparting a method of learning… I mean, pretty much anyone can memorize a bunch of formula(e/s) or whatever. It’s in how you process and store new information that sets you apart.

I can’t believe they’re only paying $20/hr. Why are such important people as teachers so undervalued?

sashafoo @ 05:45 PM | 2003/01/24

god, ONLY $20/hour? If only. That is so much more than I make now. (Of course, I totally understand where you’re coming from, but at this point $20/hr sounds like a metric buttload of money.)

Both of my parents are teachers, and neither of them have ever received the respect they deserve. Pretty sad state of affairs.

freesia @ 06:10 PM | 2003/01/24

That’s unfair, too. You have a college degree. I do not. In a balanced world this would mean you make more money than me. Man, are we off kilter. It’s a wonder we don’t fall off our axis.

sashafoo @ 07:07 PM | 2003/01/24

College degree, shmollege degree. I make less a year than it costs to go to my alma mater now. Go figure.

freesia @ 07:11 PM | 2003/01/24

I’m pretty sure that’s one of the signs the universe is about to implode. Ouch! I think it’s starting in my brain.

sashafoo @ 07:20 PM | 2003/01/24

Actually that’s even a little on the low side for tutoring wages, albeit going rates vary from place to place. Many tutors are not as competent as you might think, either.
