once more into the breach

Please welcome our newest blog-obsessed friend!

PWe and I are doing a cleanse this week. I’ve probably talked to some of you about it, but just for my own future reference, here’s what’s happening.

Day #1: Soup and Fruit
Day #2: Soup and Veggies and one Potato
Day #3: Soup and Fruit and Veggies (no Potato)
Day #4: Soup and 3 Bananas and 1 Qt. Skim Milk (This is today)
Day #5: Soup and Chicken and Tomatoes
Day #6: Soup and Chicken and Tomatoes and Veggies
Day #7: Soup and Brown Rice and Veggies

We can have as much soup as we want. We can have black coffee and unsweetened fruit juice (in small amounts) and lots of water. The soup is cabbage and green beans and celery and tomatoes and green pepper and carrots in beef stock. It’s the same menu that cardiac patients are put on before heart surgery. I’m feeling way less crave-y than I normally do around Christmastime. After all these veggies, the thought of putting fat and/or sugar in my body kinda yucks me out. Of course, once I get to MN and have the fried potato dumplings in front of me, I will probably change my mind.

Check out Sjet’s blog for info on snowflakes. We had a damn fine time.

Be careful with those low-carbohydrate diets. That looks like one to me. I’ve known people who pass out, get garbled fingernails that don’t straighten out, etc.

But it does sound kind of cleansing ; )

I feel amazing. A little weird occasionally, but no serious badness. And plus, it’s only for a week, so I’m not too worried about it. I just feel all … clean. It’s nice. Plus, I’m such a carbojunkie that quitting cold turkey for a bit might be the only way out of it.

my mom used to do that diet

it’s amusing

i’ve been tempted to try it out myself on occasion

this january, though
sugarbusters…big fun
i’m pumped
can’t you tell?

sugarbusters?

It’s pretty cool to do it for just a week. Any longer and I think I’d fall over.

Actually you should be fine re: the carbs. The major concern with an extremely low-carb diet is getting into a state called “ketosis”, where the body literally begins consuming it’s own fat reserves due to lack of carbohydrate input. As you say, you won’t be on this one for very long, and vegetables do have a small amount of carbs anyway, so given the short time it really shouldn’t be a problem.

I’ve been on a low-carb diet myself (not anything as extreme as Atkins) for about 7 weeks now, and I am noticing a distinct loss of body fat. However, I do consume about 20% of my intake as carbs, so the fat loss is very slow and gradual, which is what I’m shooting for anyway. I figure the longer it take me to lose it, the longer I’ll manage to keep it off.

And anyway, I was a major carb-aholic anyway, so an 80% reduction for me is probably like 50% for most other people. The only thing I really miss are french fries. And cookies. And pasta. And rice. And — oh, Hell! I miss you ALL, my good, good friends!

my mom is pre-diabetic
so she’s been on sugarbusters for long stretches of time

it’s not all that bad. .. or so i’m telling myself

I’m a little out of my realm here, but it sounds like there are two other ways of getting cleansed and/or losing weight:

1) Laxatives
2) Go to the gym and do leg exercises (squats or leg press)

This vegetable stuff is a passing fad.
