trying not to wake up

trying not to wake up my sleeping self-loathing

Welcome, my friends, to the show that never ends…
otherwise known as day four of my self-imposed pseudo-fast! After working on Orgasmo and spending all that time around MJ, Nicole, and Dina, I definitely developed an appreciation for the dietetic ideals they shared. They would often (along with Curtis, the last time) do detox fasts together, and they would come in to the show during the fasts with a brightness and energy I rarely saw from them normally. Dina is vegan (and eats no sweets at all), Mary Jane is vegetarian (except fish), Nicole doesn’t drink soda, etc etc etc. I was so fascinated by their enthusiasm that I decided to do one myself … or at least, my own bastardized version of it. I started out by giving up caffeine (and cigarettes) cold turkey about two/three weeks ago. I know, I’ve quit smoking before ( a half dozen times), but for some reason I really think it’s going to stick this time. Once I was okay with that, I decided to give up meat (except small amounts of fish), carbs (breads, pasta, cereal), soda (except the occasional Sprite), and sweets until we go to Illinois for Christmas. The first day was horrible, the second day wasn’t too bad, and by today I don’t really see any reason to go back. My energy has never been this high - at least, not that I can remember. I’m drinking SO much water, and I bought the “Mayo Clinic Williams Sonoma” cookbook, and I’ve been making some of the most delicious food I’ve ever had… and I’m half-considering giving up some of these things permanently. I’ve been a Dr. Pepper addict for YEARS, and over the last few months I managed to convince myself that I didn’t mind Diet Dr. Pepper (which really isn’t too bad), but now I wonder if I don’t want to pull a Mitch and just give up Soda entirely. (He also gave up Chocolate and several other things - as a junior in high school. Quite the precocious child.) Anyway, I’ve been stocking up on things like Soy Nuts (which Pamala got me addicted to - Thanks, Pamala!), Miso soup, yogurt, more vegetables than I’ve ever SEEN before… and we bought a blender, so now I’m making these amazing smoothies for myself as well. If I were really to do the fast the way the girls do it, I would ease my way into it - a couple of days of veggies and tofu, etc, followed by a couple of days of nothing but juice, followed by a couple of days of veggies and tofu - but I’m perfectly happy with the results I’ve been getting from my half-ass-fast. SHIT, I feel awesome. Anyway, enough of my eating habits.

By the way, Ben, I’m sorry. =( I didn’t get home until it was damn near eight o’clock. I’m a bad friend and I suck, but I still love you. And I feel like shit about not going. You may flog me at your convenience.

On a happier note, I am getting new glasses! HOORAY! I haven’t gotten glasses since my sophomore year of college, and I’ve beaten the hell out of them. They’ve started giving me headaches when I use them, but of course I also get headaches when I DON’T use them, so I finally gave in and went for an eye appointment at the LensCrafters in Westlake. (It’s … sort of … close to work, and they’d take walk-ins immediately, which was nice.) I was going to get glasses THERE… I found a pair I LOVED, and Bill detested them. I mean, REALLY hated them. He was not happy with them. But, of course, in typical Bill fashion, he managed to say it in the most perfect way possible … “I think you would be doing a great disservice to your pretty face by getting those frames.” (My boyfriend is the best. Ask him to tell you sometime about the story where his mom was wearing an unflattering dress.) So, good old Dina mentioned that she really loved Eyes on Fremont, so we went there. It was so great - I took probably twenty different frames, made a huge pile, and tried them all on. I found what I consider to be not only the perfect compromise between the style of frames I like and the style of frames Bill likes, but also the most flattering pair of frames for my face in the entire store. So, now I’m REALLY excited about them! I haven’t been able to see right in quite some time, and apparently my “natural” vision has worsened a bit since my last prescription. So, by this Friday, I will have new glasses! Hooray!

Plus, I got a haircut today. And I got to do a reading of a really messed up play at the Company meeting. Life, at least for the moment, is pretty rockin’. And now, Bill and I are going to trim our Christmas tree. Excuse me.
